Abbey Road Girl
My four Pepperpots and their Cube are due to arrive on Thursday. Someone here reported a Pepperpot who was a high flyer, so that's right at the top of my list of worries. I believe that after they get bulked up and laying, there is less likelihood of going over the top. But at around 16 weeks they must be young risk takers Will not let them free range without supervision, but if one did go over a fence (and mine are bog standard in terms of height), it would probably be quite a challenge to retrieve it! ajm200
Most of mine don't try to fly but can jump up onto the top of the cube and patio table. I have one gingernut who has had all of the long feathers on one wing cut to keep her grounded as she could fly up onto the 6ft fence and would often do low level flights to get to the treats first
Stevie
My garden has 7ft fencing all the way round-apart from a short section next to my decking which conveniently has a handrail next to a lower fence. My Gingernut has twice tried to go over and on the second attempt-sat perched ontop!!! Today i attached trellis to the fence and also above the gate so now theres no way she's going over...unless she's been watching "Chicken run"! Faye&Ant
One of my girls flew up onto the extension roof. This was before she had started laying and it was a windy day and had got caught in gust after being frightened by a cat. Chicken uharmed but gave me the fright of my life Their wings are most clipped now Faye x
BarbaraJ
i got mine at 17weeks, i kept them in for a week as advised and i think that helped. 2 do low level (foot off ground) flying to get food but no hopping on to anything yet thank god as have lots of kids toys and house they could get on. Haven't even seen them on the chairs yet, maybe i feed them too much lol or they ust like the garden! think thye want to come inside s Amber was tapping her beak on the cat flap lol
eggypeggy
Peggy my Pepperpot, repeatedly escapes from the chicken area. She manages to jump/flap from the run onto a climbing Jasmin plant and then over to the other part of our garden! Clearing 6 ft easily, with hep of the run. She's a bit like water, if you block one way through, she'll find another way. Smarter than your average chook.
Egluntyne
Two of my girls, Dixie Chick and Peckadilly, often stand on top of the run and fly over the netting onto the grass.
rachel m
after a few days of free ranging, we are now having to let them in a limited area for a week or so as the grass had a weed treatment. the temp area has only a 3ft fence, so we have found them on the grass a couple of times, especially delia. i think that she jumps onto the eglu run and lanches over the fence from there, as i have had to chase her down from there a couple of time. she is still pretty young though so i hope she grows out of it. just wondered if any of you experienced omleteers can let me know how high the omlet netting fence is as i can't see that mentioned in the product description? Karen & co.
My two leghorns fly in and out of the eglu netting run all day They fly back in to lay and eat and then out again, I tried counting how often once and lost track now I just let them get on with it Karen x
kiwichick
My two australorps are pretty big girls and they've both had a wing clipped. There's no way they are going over the 8ft fences but can run so fast they get airborne to about 3ft off the ground. I got the shock of my life a couple of weeks ago when one of them came flying at me kickboxing style I think she thinks she's a roo
Shirl
A couple of mine have had really good attempts at flying but only when frightened so although they can escape they don't.
dogs and chickens
When I walk up the garden, if the chooks see me coming they fly over the Omlet netting to come and see me Makes me smile .
Lydia
Ping (Pepperpot) will happily fly over the gate at the back door that we installed to keep them from tapping the cat flap worrying the cats Volty (ex-batt) discovered her wings after about fortnight and we looked out to see her happily sitting atop of the cherry tree with a "hey mum, look what I can do!" look on her face She now regularly jumps on your back if you're bending down to refill food/water etc and then climbs up your back and sits on your shoulder!
