lisaroo2
Hello! Just thought I'd drop by and introduce myself. My name's Lisa and as of Monday I am now the proud owner of a brand new green eglu! My partner and I can't decide where to buy our chickens from, do they travel ok as we've seen a place in leicester that we might be interest in buying from. This would mean approx 1 1/2 hours for the chickens to travel. Also, does anyone out there know anything about de-beaking? A supplier i spoke to does this to her chickens but it doesn't seem very fair to the bird. I look forward to getting to know you all and am really excited about getting some chucks very soon. henny penny
Hi Lisa and welcome to the forum. I'm getting my new chickens from a place approx an hour away from us on Friday- so think they would be ok? I think that often people who keep large numbers of chickens often de-beak their chickens presumably to reduce the incidence of pecking.':?' I can't believe people still do this - it's cruel, painful and should be banned.
Carol U
Debeaking is horrible and quite unnecessary for domestic pets. As for the travelling, chickens are fine for journeys of 1 1/2 hours or so. My first two came from Omlet in Oxfordshire to Surrey and were fine. If you put them in a dark box (with air holes) and either shredded paper or straw or similar in the bottom, they will just settle down and sleep for the journey. Good luck - we look forward to seeing pictures soon.
Egluntyne
Welcome to the forum lisaroo2. Don't buy from the breeder who routinely de-beaks. It is un neccesarily cruel and unacceptable for backyard poultry. If the place in Leicester is Merrydale it is excellent. Good luck.
Gamebird
Welcome to the forum Lisaroo2. I'm a new chicken owner too and I am enjoying every minute of them. I agree with the others - I don't think debeaking is necessary. I hope you find a good supplier and we are all looking forward to photos when you get them.
