Calcium and soft shelled aggs

Recommended Posts

Phoebe has been laying very soft eggs for the last few weeks (I thought she was breaking them initially, but I now realise they are very soft and she was in fact just squashing them  ). I have baked some egg shells and crushed them into food along with some cod liver oil as I heard these are good for extra vit D and calcium, but is there anything else I should give her; is dairy a good source of calcium for hens?. They have layers pellets and a range of treats in the afternoons, Daphne obviuosly eats the same diet and her eggs are fine. I am a bit concerned about egg peritonitis, can this occur with soft shelled eggs?

Hi,

I have been having the same problem with one of mine. As you say, they are all on the same diet but it is only affecting one of them. I have been putting limestone flour in the pellets and oyster grit, which I was told on here should sort the problem out, which it seemed to sor a couple of days and now i'm back to softies again, which she is passing about twice a day.

You mentioned egg peritonitis, what is this?

I got mine from ebay too. It's given to totoises to keep there shells in good shape. Thatnk for the advice on peritonitis I had a look on the clinic. Poppy looks alot better in herself today. Very red wattles & comb. The best she's looked in a while actually. I had to do a double take when I saw her. Hopefully she will get back on track soon. No egg at all today, but i'd rather no egg than a soft egg!
