bronze
How old do you think a chick has to be before it can cope with getting into the cube?
Abbey Road Girl
I got my hens from Omlet so they were 16-20 weeks old. The Omlet man put them inside the Cube so that their first experience was having to go down the ladder, not up. Two had to be gently urged out from the back of the Cube but at dusk they all managed to get up into the Cube without any help. Since I had read here about some hens having difficulty with the Cube ladder, I had considered making a temporary wooden ladder (plank with cross pieces for gripping) but had too much other prep work to do! Is your chick going to be on its own? Is it one that you hatched? Will it need to be kept warm? I would worry more about that than whether it can get into the Cube as you can aways pop chickens in and out the back of the Cube if you need to. bronze
Its ok its the one that hatched under a broody whos doing a very good job of looking after it. theyre currently cavorting around the garden winding up all the other girls who arent being allowed out. Its only a few weeks old at the moment but I'm thinking ahead as to whos going to sleep where as I currently have eggs in the incubator too. MadMitch
Glad you asked that question as when my cube arrives (13 days to go) the only chickens I can find in this area will be 8 - 12 weeks. How big is this?........will they be big enough to cope?
Ziggy
(Sorry to butt in, no answer to the question, but just wanted to say I just love your avatar, MadMitch... it's the cutest thing ever... she looks just like my cat Shaman, on my avatar)

Anyone with both a Eglu and a Cube (a hamlet?) will have this problem, methinks. Good luck. I'm sure you and they will sort it out.

I have only the roughest idea of where you are - are you within driving distance of Crickhowell ?: if so, maybe able to help with where you can get older chooks. bronze
Whos in Crickhowell? I love that place. My Dad was friends with Lord Cs neice and we used to use the cottage opposite his house for holidays. I remember well damning the stream and watching kingfishers. Happy times. Snowy
12 weeks is definitely big enough to cope with the cube ladder. I had two of my girls from 12 weeks old, although they were not in the cube then, they were big enough and could fly well enoough! Couldn't say about any younger as that's the youngest I've ever had

We are about 60 miles from Crickhowell, so it is do-able. OH has got his mind set on some he saw at a rare breeds farm up the road though.
