The weekend!!

Recommended Posts

Well my eglu turned up last Wednesday and got 3 gingernut rangers (18weeks) on Saturday from a local breeder.

So far so good!! They seem to like their new home and run and have settled in fine. I know its soon but yesterday (Sunday) I couldn't help but let them out into the garden :? They didn't go too far and didn't have any problems ushering them back into the run after an hour of exploring. I've found (and I know its early days) they'll do anything for some porridge oats. Hold my hand out and they're over like a shot which is handy for getting them back in to the run.

What the don't like though is the bin men!! They were not at all happy when they started banging around at 9am. I told them to get used to it cause they come every Monday morning.

So I'm just getting my head round all the poo and waiting for my 1st egg.

Anyway thanks again for the advice last week. I'll no doubt have plenty more questions in the coming weeks..........

I think the idea of keeping them in the run for the first few days is so they associate it as home and a safe place - so if they do get a scare that's where they go to to feel safe - not up a tree or next doors garden!

Mixed corn works a treat in getting hens where you want them, but they do get a bit savvy about being tricked back in to the run.

I am glad it is going well - and don't forget the pictures!

I've got to look into "how to post pics" in FAQ. I'm not too sure how to do it yet. I'm trying to workout if I can send pictures off my mobile to my email address. Anyway I best go and check on my chickens!!! Its at least 10mins since I last checked on them...........

Congratulations, glad you are enjoying them - I don't think many people can resist letting them out much sooner than the recommended five days!

I'd be slightly cautious about the porridge oats, tbh - anything that is dry and swells up in water (like oats) should be avoided, because if they eat a lot of it and then drink some water, it can swell up inside their crop and cause problems. I'm sure the odd handful to get them back in the run won't hurt, but best not to give them a lot.
