Book group chat for Aprils choice - 'Bel Canto'

Recommended Posts

I apologise for not contributing to this discussion - first I forgot to get to get it in time, then I read the first few comments and decided it sounded too good to miss. Just received it off ebay (£2.20 inc postage 8) ). But I'm saving it to read on holiday in two weeks time  In my defense, I read May's choice last month  So I'm actually ahead, rather than way behind

Sorry for extreme lateness of my contribution, and I still haven't finished the book, it had to go back to the library

I have read all your comments, and I am afraid I feel the same way as Egluntine. I found it so hard to get into. I gave up after 30 pages, I was

bored. Then I felt guilty  and tried all over again. I got about three quarters way through and just somehow never returned to it. I found the premise very interesting....throw a load of people who had never met before into a restricted situation and watch what happens. Inevitably some will be friends, some will dislike each other and some may even fall in love, a bit like a bigger version of Big Brother  The over long descriptions of how wonderful Carmen was bored me stupid. I also found the length of the seige unbelievable. In the end I suppose I didn't really feel I cared very much about any of the characters, if I hadn't been reading it for a book club I would have given up after 30 pages and not returned to it. I think she writes really well though. I looked her up and see she has written a book about herself and a stray dog she found called "Anne and Rose" which I might try and get hold of.

Have I broken the record for the length of time to read a book?

I finished this this morning. Infact I only really got into it while I was away last week despite carrying it around with me for months.

I found the fist two thirds hard going then i read the last section in 2 days.

The length of the siege seemed a bit far fetched, but the relationships were real enough, except there didn't really seem to be anyone who really hated anyone else which is hard to believe given the characters and circumstances.

Overall I enjoyed the book but I would not have finished it if it hadn't been a book club read.

The epilogue was a disappointment, but as I think it was Olly that said you do have a bond with other people from a situation like that and there don't have to be secrets which can be very damaging in a relationship.

I have so many books that i want to read at the moment I don't know where to go from here. I have a weeks holiday coming up soon when I will probably read quite a bit so I will have to look at the books that I have missed and take it from there.
