Stevie
I've had Sage & Onion for 4 weeks now.Sage is a Miss Pepperpot and Onion is a Gingernut-both from Omlet.Sage started laying 22nd April and has laid one a day ever since. So far-nothing from Onion, but how old do you think she is from these pics i took today? I dont have a benchmark close up picture to compare her wattle & comb with so im asking here! The Omlet guy reconed they were around 17 weeks old when he was here setting up the Eglu, but its almost 2 weeks since Sage started laying and im curious to know when Onion will start. She has gotten bigger, but isnt crouching like Sage did prior to starting. Snowy
It is hard to tell for definite at this age, I would say 18 - 20 weeks. She still looks quite immature with her tiny comb and wattles and bright yellow legs. They should start to change over the next couple of weeks though and eggs will soon follow! PS she's a bit of a poser isn't she? (but very pretty)
Chickvic
Sorry Stevie I can't answer you question but I am intrigued because Onion could be my Ruby's twin. She has a very similar small comb especially noticable when compared to Pearl and Opal. Pearl and Opal have only just started crouching and they've been laying for a week and their combs are still pink!

The Omlet guy said they were around 17 weeks old,but it was obvious even back then that Sage was older because of the size difference.Oh well, another couple of weeks then. This is Sage who has been laying almost 2 weeks and you can see a big difference in her wattle & comb. They're both posers! Point a camera at them and they start vogueing! Ain't Nobody Here
She looks a bit like my Milly too . Here's Milly at the beginning of October, aged 17 weeks: Here she is at the end of November:
Stevie
Brilliant! Thats what i needed-photos of another Gingernut.I can see a big difference with your Milly. Her comb in particular is huge compared to Onions. Thank you!
Chicken Licken
I don't have a before and after pic - but here is one of my lovely clara last summer. As you can see her comb and wattles are much bigger and also much redder than your little girls at the moment. She will get there in the end - I am still wating for my first 3 egg day since getting the new girls a couple of weeks ago. Today has been the first day without any pecking order issues. Maybe tomorrow
moomin
She is very beautiful!! How on earth d'you get your chooks to stay still for a photo?? Mine are forever on the go, heads up and down, pecking stuff!! All my photos come out with blurred bits on!!
Abbey Road Girl
Stevie, both of your girls have gorgeous yellow legs! My Pepperpots should be so lucky!
Stevie
How on earth d'you get your chooks to stay still for a photo?? Easy....superglue... Only kidding! I make a 'click click' sound with my tongue or say "chook chooky chooky chooky" which makes them stay still just long enough for me to photograph them. Also helps having the camera set up in advance on the correct setting! Egluntyne
The yellow legs fade once they start laying. Back to the original question, her head gear suggests. like Snowy says, that she is somewhere around 18 -20 weeks give or take. I remember that my Pepperpots matured quicker than my Gingernut girls too.

MaxBaz
Nan (Gingernut) has still got a tiny comb/no wattles - even though she was delivered on 19th March - she is much smaller than Kay - the other Gingernut - although they were both supposed to be 17 weeks old. Kay is FAR ahead in the comb/wattle stakes. Looking at the photos made me realise that Nan has such white legs - do they start off yellow, then turn white/pale?
