Potato peelings...

Recommended Posts

Just a quick check from a new chook mum...

...am boiling up potato peelings to go soft as I type. The skins are on, and I've cut them into small-ish pieces. Is this right?????????? :?:?

I know this is a simple task but want to do the best for my girls...maybe, just maybe they'll like this treat as they've turned their pretty little beaks up at my treat offerings so far.

I haven't given mine potato yet, but I think as long as they are cooked it is fine

Have fun - I am trying to cut down on the treats a bit now as mine seem to have been inundated with them over past few days, every visitor gets to feed corn or whatever

The feelings seem soft-ish now and have been on for about 10mins, will let them cool down and then see what the ladies make of them, but I'm not holding my breath! Does anybody mix anything else with them? Also want to try the girls on porridge oats tommorrow which I presume I mix with water not milk? Never made porridge in me life before...

Yep porriage with water, make it like wall paper paste, doesn't really matter as long as they have lots of fresh water to wash it down with, they won't complain... I tend to give mine porriage if its been cold out.

You can mix their layer mash into the potatoes peelings to add substance if you like.

Also you should try - veg peelings, cherry tomatoes, (they love them) grapes are good... and Tinned sweetcorn (make sure its just in water though) and Not to much too soon! Soon you will be feeding them better than you do your children!

That is so sweet!

Mine get porridge made with hot water, by the time it's gone cold the porridge has soaked up most of the water (which is good), then I add some more so it's like a wet sludge. They love it!

Grapes? - no

Cherry tomatoes? - no

Pasta? - no

Potatoe peelings - a definite maybe...

The peelings have gone outand they SEEM to like them, after they've had a couple of pecks they wipe their beaks on the grass (what's left!). I've put two pots in the pen, one at the bottom for Daisy who is STILL being bullied by the other two. I added water to that pot thinking Daisy might get some more moisture, well the other two have muscled in and are now peeling-bobbing! Oh well, if it makes em happy... :D

Move the definite may be to a YES! :D:D:D:D

Have upset Rosie by adding water to the other bowl, she can't guard both. When she saw me adding the water she gave me that 'but I'm the only one that's given u an egg yet and this is how you repay me' look! Trouble is, I don't think Daisy's figured it out yet either!

Mine love a few dollops of live, bio yoghurt on anything really.

Cooked potato peelings are a fav with my lot (I don't mash them or cut them up, they just have them cooked as they are). Mine hate tomatoes and raw carrot peelings but fall over each other for cooked rice and pasta.

But the ultimate favourite I've only just recently discovered is live, white (undyed) maggots from the fishing tackle shop....... the only downside (apart from the cost - £2.90 for a pint) is you have to keep them in your fridge :vom:

My lot also love banana but they only get the bruised bits my son doesn't like.

Few more treat ideas on this post below.

I wondered about the keeping bit - went into the local fishing shop with my 3 year old this afternoon as he wanted to go in and I thought I might as well ask  So you have to keep them in the fridge - not sure if I could get DH to go with that one :? How long do they keep? Might have to get them some at some point.

Most angling shops will sell you 1/2 pint so you wont need a full pint. You need to store them in a fridge to slow down their transformation from maggot to crysalis and then to fly.Kept at normal fridge temp-they should keep for about a week, but keep an eye on their colour-the crysalis stage is purple and fly is soon after.

When i was a kid and used to fish a lot-my mother hated me keeping them in the fridge!!!

Don't give up, Lisa, Daisy may yet figure it out. I've had my Pepperpots since the 17th of April. It was clear from the beginning that Truffle was going to be at the bottom of the pecking order.

However in the last few days she has cottoned on to the fact that I will distract the other three with a treat in order to toss one specifically in her direction. Instead of joining the scrum, she waits for the treat she understands will be forthcoming (at least to the best of my ability).

I hope the bond doesn't backfire on her! But she has indeed come to understand.

Amazing when you think how very tiny their brains must be compared to their legs and feet!

when i was younger i remember my friend getting a phone call to the school office from his mother telling him to get home immediately- and it was because he left the maggot box slightly open and they were all over the inside of the fridge  to which his mother refused to deal with

:vom: Hmm, not so sure about the idea of maggots after reading that!

My grandfather was a keen fisherman, and he used to keep maggots in his coat pocket. I presume they came in a container, and he just tipped it in ... he always referred to them as 'gentles' I believe. I'm not sure what he did at the end of a day's fishing, I hope he threw any leftovers into the water!
