Doris off colour/ noise pollution help

Recommended Posts

Hi Can anyone help us, Doris (gingernut ranger) has gone very quiet. She was running around the garden up to her nosey self. Then all of a sudden she has gone very quiet, perched on a log we have in the garden. Last weekend she laid an egg with no shell. Since then we have had one or two eggs not regular eggs like we use to get everyday.

Our neighbours bought a device to scare cats out of their garden, that makes a very high pitch sound even we can hear it and it really hurts our ears. The cats dont seem to bother about the noise. But we have noticed that since our neighbours have had this device our chickens haven't laid properly. Does anyone think that this device can affect our chickens.

We have rang our council to complain about this terrible noise, and they are looking into it and are coming over to visit to hear the noise. I said i think it may be affecting our chickens but they said that they can't do anything about it, but can if it is causing the family discomfort. We have also noticed the the birds dont feed in the garden anymore either, again since this device was activated in their garden.

Can anyone give us any suggestions.

Many thanks in advance

Claire :o)

I do not have any first hand knowledge of your problem, but my mum has one of these devices, hers gives off a lowish tone. When we saw her recently I did give a thought to what affect it might have on pets in other peoples gardens. She has birds in her garden, a backbird has even nested and raised young in previous years. Do hope you get this sorted out.

would a polite chat with your neighbour be out of the question? I suppose now that you've reported it to the council, the neighbour might not be as responsive to a friendly chat :?

Is the chicken hunched? It could be the effect of the soft eggs, although they tend to perk up the next day. It could be that she is unable to lay an egg. If you feel round the backside of the chicken you can sometimes feel if there is an egg, depending where it is, and holding her over a bowl of steam may pass the egg. Other things I've experienced are chickens with worms or crop problems, so might be worth worming, perhaps with something like panacur directly into the beak and feeling the crop to see if it is blocked or liquidy. I've no idea about the noise though.

I hope she perks up soon.

Our neighbours have since removed this device from the garden since the council have been on to them.

Hey presto the chickens have started laying again. Not regular like they use to but we have had three eggs this week. It has been over three weeks since they have layed properly, i just hope this device that our neighbours had in their garden hasn't put them off laying altogether.

Could this just be a conincidence and our chickens have decided to stop laying altogether, do they do this after a year old???????? Can anyone help us??????????

That's interesting, because I have been decorating our kitchen this week, with the radio on quite loud and Phoebe (who was in and out helping me!) started to behave very oddly - twitching her head, gulping and scratching her ears. Which stopped and started instantly with the loud noise. So I think loud noises do affect them.
