Where to go in Dorset?

Recommended Posts

My friends are coming South next week from Yorkshire for a holiday with the teenagers and are bringing their dog with them. Any suggestions for dog friendly places to visit in Dorset?

I fancied Monkey World, but all you get is an automated voice when ringing; I've emailed them to see if they have kennels for the dog, but they haven't bothered to email back. They're obviously not good on customer service.

All suggestions welcome.

I love Dorset 8)

Portland is a fab place and if you have the stamina to walk round the edge of the Island it is a great day with dogs it is about 8.5 miles round and there is a pub at the bill for a break in the middle

There is a sculpture park there as well just at the top of Fortuneswell which was fab :P

You can also go up the lighthouse (the main one) the other two are converted one is a bird observatory and the other is a house now 8)

I wouldn't go near monkey world if you paid me

But thats another story

The tank museun in Wool is a good day out but you would not be able to take the dog :?

Lots of places - Lulworth Cove, Kimmeridge (fossil hunting), Corfe Castle (was being patched up last year so don't know if it is completely accessible) which was great for hide and seek - for small un's and younger teens because they are sneaky and takes ages to find them. There is an old "ghost town" between Corfe and Kimmeridge, can't remember the name though. It was abandoned because of the firing range, but still looked after including the old school house. Lyme Regis is nice busy little place, lots of winding alleys, and the quay is a nice meander. Lots of nice picnic places like Badbury Rings. There is a bird sanctuary near Poole Harbour or pop across to Brownsea Island - lots of red squirrels there. Maiden Castle - hill fort near Dorchester. Wimborne Minster is nice for a wander around. I like Dorset - can you tell?

How old are the teenagers? There is a Dinosaur museum in Lyme Regis that would appeal to younger teens, but my children (daughter 15 when we went last year) liked Kimmeridge because of the fossil hunting (tiny ammonite things, but keeps them amused) and if you cut some bacon up and take string, they fished for crabs for hours there. At Studland Bay - the larger of the beaches, there is a barbeque area which was nice to round off the day with a bit of crabbing there too. Crabs are too small to eat, but they can be fairly big enough to impress!

......but don't forget that on some of the smaller Studland beaches, you will be over-dressed if wearing a bikini!

I love Dorset..... and Studland in particular..... 8)

Studland is stunning - my Gran lives a short distance away in Bridport.

We enjoyed Monkey World too, although it was many years ago since we visited.

Another place owth a look is the Dosret Biscuit Factory (my Gran used to live opposite), where you can tour & see the wonderful bisciuts being made

The Dorset biscuit factory...Drool...

We used to pass it every time we camped in Dorest and we would always try to go first thing in the morning because they used to sell of browk and miss shape biscuits in big bags. They were so fresh tasting and delish.

They don't do it so much now because they don't have as many left after the tourists have been in eating them out of the baskets that they have in the viewing gallery where you can see and smell the biscuits being made.

We used to camp at Highlands End Epye where our Cabanon frame tent was turned to streamers in a storm or at their sister site Golden Cap at Seatown which has a great pub that serves food out on the cliff top, great at sunset and the beer is to die for a local brew.

Cliffs and dogs don't always mix though :?

I forgot to mention at Studland there is a nature watch for men - not of particular interest to women, could be a source of amusement for teens though.:shock: The naturist beach area is well away from the crowds, but if you walk towards Sandbanks you will find it eventually - unless of course anyone here is a naturist, then that is the place to go (bit more windy and exposed in that part in more ways than one!!). :wink:King Harry Rocks are there too, Swanage might interest teens more.

Biscuit Factory??? Sounds good to me - not been there, might go soon!

I found it by mistake the first time - many years ago - there was room in the car-park, so I parked in there.........
