Ahh, lice

Recommended Posts

I'm astounded that I have to take a louse ridden hen into see the vet on Monday!!!!!! Even then she may not prescribe what I'd like her to.

Anyone else had problems getting Ivomex Eprinex?

AJuff, take a copy of this article along with you

hthttp://tp://www.pekinbantams.com/ivomec.asp

It's not licenced for use on poultry in the UK, so they are quite right to be reluctant to prescribe it, but most farm vets do recommend it for use on chooks.

We got the Eprinex pour on for cattle from our vet but afterwards found you can buy it on line cheaper. Just Google it and there are several places that come up and say no prescription needed as well!

Our vet said he had been on a recent seminar where it had been hailed the new wonder treatment for poultry keepers. He suggested one week egg withdrawal, but did say that this was just his opinion and as there was no milk withdrawal period when used on cattle it may not be necessary to have an egg withdrawal period either.

The dosage we gave was 2 drops per chook however we read other people had given up to 5 drops. All lice gone within 2 days :) and so much easier than dusting 6 chooks

Which online site did you buy it from? Does it have a product code?

I'm having a battle here trying to find some and I am not resorting to sparying stuff over them. I couldn't be sure that I'd got them all. Plus I've two very flighty hens who don't so much as want you to look at them never mind dust them down.

Thanks for all the tips on getting rid of lice....I have now ordered some Ivomec Eprinex. We have tried louse powder with not much luck,Today we noticed that our broody hen"baby girl" is still crawling with lice....minging.Our other 4 seem to be doing a lot of digging at themselves. Can't wait for the Ivomec Eprinex to arrive (makes me itch).Just one question, is it ok to treat baby girl even though she is sitting at the mo and the eggs are due to hatch this Tuesday ( 03-06-08 ). What would you guys advise.

thanks

Is this the stuff??? :?

Due to returning to work tomorrow and having to trapse a hen to the vet six miles away I have a few issues. My daughter can't get to her ballet lesson and I won't have time to feed my son before he goes to choir and . . . . I can't see the point of all the agro going to the vet to be charged money to tell me they have lice when i already know!!!!!!!!!!

Someone please tell me exactly what to order from where and I'll cancel the vet altogether. Thank you.

Also found Xeno 50 mini spot on on the same site. Very confused now!! :?

Found this while searching the web for info about Eprinex and poultry:

"EPRINEX is highly suited as a late season treatment [in cows] for three reasons. It ís the most potent endectocide with the greatest range of persistent activity claims for various parasite genera. Itís ideally suited for use to lift the cows in the last few weeks of lactation. Eprinomectin, the active ingredient in EPRINEX, has been chemically engineered to be actively partitioned away from milk. It has a milk to plasma ratio of 0.17, compared to around 1.0 for first generation endectocides, so has around five times lower milk levels than other endectocides. And, EPRINEX, is 100% weatherproof."

Note the point about Eprinex being chemically engineered to be actively partitioned away from milk (my underlining). This suggests to me that, while there is no milk withdrawal period after its use in cows, this is unlikely to apply to eggs and poultry. Since chooks will have a vastly different biology to cows, there is no way we can know what the concentration of Eprinex in the eggs is. But since Eprinex can be used in humans, perhaps it doesn't matter?

Anyway, I thought I would pass this on to help people make up their minds.

I think I might still use it, but perhaps when the birds moult since there won't be any eggs for a while then anyway. If they get lice/red mite in the meantime, I think I will have to do battle with the dusting powders!

As it only comes in huge bottles, I did wonder if it could be used on my horse and cats too??? I will do a bit more surfing I think!

Yes this is the correct stuff. We got ours from the vet as thought it was prescription only.

They also sell it here http://www.vetstoria.co.uk/templates/eprinex_pour_on_cattle_250ml_-7-22350-familyfarm.html

Hope this helps.

That mole valley price is good.

Loulouj - broodies tend to get lice more frequently because they get very hot when they are brooding and tend to eat less, so also lack a bit in condition - lice are always drawn to any warm and/or poorly animal more than an active healthy one.

I have found that a bottle lasts me for absolutely ages, and that's with 10 hens to treat and giving some away to friends, so it's good value. I usually treat my girls a s a preventative measure at the beginning oand end of their moulting session, so they're not producing any eggs at the time. Having said that, I was very busy earlier this year and forgot, so have only just treated them last week

Our vet gave us Xeno 200 spray on 50ml... one squirt per 200g body weight.

Be careful... someone mentioned no egg withdrawal... my vet has stated no eggs for 2 weeks! Also to break the cycle of the lice you have to use it once, then again in two weeks an then after another 4 weeks.... so no eggs for two months.

It looks like there are varying views on egg withdrawal, but as most of our eggs are used with our kids or other families with kids, I'm inclined to wait for the eggs...

Just ordered some from www.hyperdrug.co.uk

We shall see what happens this time. When I got in from work tonight my poor broodies backside is heaving in them so I patted some louse powder on it with a cotton pad...she wasn't too happy to say the least.Poor thing, I really need to get rid of these horrible little crawling things.

My Vet, who keeps bantams, told me to spray Frontline for cats under their wing in the "armpit" just one squirt each side. This is not a licensed for use on poultry in the UK, but the Vet advised me that he had been doing so for many years without any problems. It worked ok.

Just googled frontline for cats and there are lots of different types???? Which one to use? Also is there an egg withdrawal for Frontline???

Hi all just been reading this and want to ask;

What about Ivermectin drops by Pharmaq ltd ? It comes in a small dropper bottle 0.8%.

We were given this by our local poultry centre who advised us to drop 1 dose on the back of the neck per 500g bodyweight. and again after 1 month.

Again not licenced for use in poultry but obviously used.

my vet prescribed frontline last summer for my girls. It is a 100 ml spray bottle for dogs and cats. It is not licensed for birds but works a treat. One spray ber bird (for me on the bottom under the vent as this was where the lice were) and then egg withdrawal for 7 days afterwards. I use barrier louse powder as a preventative in the nest box and on the chooks periodically. But if they had lice I would be straight back to the frontline - touchwood they are louse free for the mo! Not sure when it expires as the vets label is on that bit!
