Lewis
Babs our Pekin Bantam has gone broody, it is the second time as she went broody last year which lasted ages. As we do not have a cockerel her eggs are not fertile so she will not hatch anything. We has 2 quail and the last one died last week, I was wondering how much success people have had with hatching quail under a bantam. Babs is kept on her own as she does not like other birds, so we would have to separate the quail from her, I know we would need a brooder to keep the chicks in, and I am planning to use a converted old tortoise vivarium! beach chick
I have read that banties are really good mums, so you could be successful! it doesnt seem to matter what eggs go under what bird as far as I can tell, but I'm sure lots of people know better than me. we are planning to raise some eggs, but also to leave them with the hen mummy rather than a brooder. my sister-in-law has just tried the incy thing (1 chick out of 10 eggs) and she reckons the mother hen is the best route. Lewis
I have read that banties are really good mums, Babs could be an exception to the rule , she killed 2 of out Belgiun Quail bantams, and also took half the wing feathers off of matilda the Black Star. She didn't get on with the quail either, trying to peck at it through the chicken wire run! I think we'd be best to take the chicks off her when they hatch I'll be at home as I am on study leave so I can keep an eye out for hatching eggs. Now to decide what breed to go for and where to get fertile eggs from...
Bondinho
I thought chooks killed quail usually, but whether a broody would do that to any quail that they hatched I'm unsure?? I guess if you were quick enough to take them out as soon as they hatched it might be ok...
