Egg Lou
Apologies in advance for the long post.. I am going to choose my girls next Friday and have a dilema..so would really like some feed back from owners of the following breeds if poss?? Black Tailed Suffolk already decided by OH Amber Star has already chosen us and being reserved so thats two.. two to go.. Others available are .. Cooper Noir/ Black Rock/ Pepperpot Pied Suffolk Bluebelle Warren/Ranger Now Daughter and I are choosing one each.. she is torn between Pied (this is her favourite) or Cooper Noir or another Amber Star. I would really love a Bluebelle especially after seeing suferdogs beautiful girls yesterday ( thank you!) but wonder if the others will be better for me? But.. we both want to have lots of cuddles, so friendly, quiet and docile ( don't want much!) girls would be best.. Can any one offer any advice based on their own chooks as desperate to get it right!
Abbey Road Girl
I can only describe my experince with the Miss Pepperpots. Unlike you and your daughter, I wasn't particularly looking for cuddles. I was looking for hardiness, reliable egg laying and reluctance to fly! I didn't expect them to be very friendly or tame. I am surprised at how friendly and tame they are (and I didn't really expect them to look as handsome as they do either), especially since I haven't handled them a lot. They may try to dodge a bit if I reach down to stroke them but they seem to be getting more tolerant. Toffee is the most skittish and Truffle is almost flirtatious. In the end it probably comes down to the individual hen and that's what I'd look for. Have a great time chosing!
Tessa the Duchess
I have no experience with any chickens apart from Pepperpots. I would get a Bluebell because I think they are just beautiful Tessa
pbfhpunk
I have two bluebelles and they are definately the tamest of my 6, they are very cute and when the others run to use they kinda waddle which is very funny to see, when I pick one of them up she leans her head on my chest and makes a soft bok bok, which is so cute it makes my ovaries pop!. Egluntyne
My "pre-loved" hen, Piper Is a Pied Suffolk (hence her name). Very beautiful, very friendly, doesn't mind being picked up, lays beautiful dark brown eggs and has integrated like a dream with the other hens. I would recommend the breed, if only for looks. Guest
Bluebelles are just the most gorgeous chickens ever - I really miss my big fat bluebelles - the were just gorgeous, and really reliable layers.
Tigerlily
My 3 are a black rock, a warren and a bluebelle... I couldn't pick my favourite - I love them all! Betty my bluebelle is the most timid at the mo, but I have only had them 5 days so it is too early to tell! Rosie my warren is very sweet natured and Mabel the black rock is very confident. But... Egluntine's Pied Suffiolk - Piper just looks so beautiful *sigh* It is so hard to pick chucks! I nearly reserved an amber star, but changed my mind for a bluebelle instead! MedusA
I'm glad you chose a Suffolk Blacktail. I love my Toffee and she is a very reliable hen. I have a Suffolk Noir, who is very like a Pepperpot. She has very soft feathers which have a green sheen in the sunshine, but she is not my friendliest hen. Bluebelles do look lovely, but I haven't any experience of them or the Pied Suffolk, which also looks fabulous. My current favourite of all my girls is my cuckoo Silkie, Muggle. Now if you want a hen who is more like a cuddly toy than a chicken..........
joegg
Bellina our black rock was initially the tamest, she is beautiful very black and shiny and very docile.Occasionally takes a hop into friendly neighbours garden, definitely the most adventurous of our three.Lays most days if she misses we are in for a double the next day. Maggie the magpie i assume she is a pied is the benevolent boss, largest of our three initially the most timid with people but seven year old son has given her much love over the last three weeks and she will happily sit on his lap and have a cwtch. Reliable layer 6/7. Likes to make it known she has a pressie for us. Layla the RIR is definitely the friendliest, classic little red hen enjoys being carried round the garden, will sit on youngest daughters lap and is sent by being stroked , often ventures into kitchen. Three fantastic productive and responsive pets.
joegg
If we had gone for four i would have chosen a bluebelle on looks alone.
superjules
When I went chook shopping, I had a bluebelle on my list but ended up with a pied suffolk. Magpie is a big, friendly, gorgeous, quiet kind of gal. She has taken one day off laying pink tinted eggs since she started at Easter and only ever makes a sound when she has laid an egg. I think she's my best looking chook - and I have pure breeds too:
Egg Lou
Thanks all! I know some of you have told me about pied's before so apologise for asking twice! Think the line up will prob be.. Amber star Black tailed suffolk Pied Bluebelle That is of course unless I get there and something else just looks up with deep meaningful eyes
superjules
It's really nice to be able to tell them apart from a distance, and also have a nice range of egg colours. When I got my amber and pied, I had a bluebelle and a columbine on my shopping list, you just have to see what takes your fancy on the day. Go with an open mind and enjoy your chook-shopping. Jules.
Gertrude my new bluebelle is quite hard to cacth, but she's only 20 weeks old. Rosa her friend is a speckeldy, & the softest, cuddliest chicken I have ever met ( I've only really met 4!) Here they are, Rosa is on the right. Just like people their characters are all different.
