I hate..................

Hugs make the world a happier place, I say.

School has just issued a policy on physical contact with students. I understand why, child protection is vital, it just seems sad to me that contact has to be policy-ised.

I've been hugged by students many times over the years, and instinctively know what is right and what isn't. My own little ones have been sat on an adult's knee at school if they were hurt or upset, and I'd rather have that happen than have them feel sad. I've sat for 45 minutes holding the hand of a young man who was crying because his mum was terminally ill - years later he thanked me & told me that it was the only time anyone in school had offered that kind of comfort. That makes me feel so sad; people are so worried about inappropriate contact that they won't risk any contact at all.

My own kids hug and are hugged, and kissed and cuddled... but not in front of ES's friends any more, apparently it's embarrassing these days! :(

Alright then... I'll forgive for this time, Claret... but I'd better get two hugs next time, or I'll sulk big time!!!

It's difficult in schools, there are so much fear about everything nowadays that people forget what natural, normal behaviour is, especially when comforting someone... our school doesn't ban hugs, thankfully, and little ones are held and hugged and sitting on teachers' laps when upset... I hope they don't ever ban it... it would not be a good thing for children's emotional development, it'd make them feel that touch and hugs are somehow bad or shameful...

Years ago, when Rosie was still at nursery (thankfully a huggy one) I heard reports of a nursery asking their staff to put a cushion on their laps before sitting child there, to avoid any possible contact. While I can see that this may be to protect the carer from any allegations as much as the child, it isn't always practical.

My son's g.friend works in a nursery. The staff are not allowed to hug the children or sit them on their laps  I find this ridiculous as they have to change their nappies.

I think some people just are not properly informed... most nurseries happily clean children up... having a messy child and not cleaning her up is a good way of spreading mess everywhere, and also in my opinion comes close to neglect... There are actually no laws against taking care of children when it is needed, and cleaning a young child sure can be a necessity...

Whatever next??

It was over 11 years ago now...................

Luckily it was 10 mins before the end of the session, & I did feel there may have been an air of 'can't be bothered' about it.

In fact we found a new nursery shortly afterwards & I became very actively involved in the running of it :D
