Being called 'love' by people I don't know.

 

I have just had a girl on the till at Tesco who couldn't have been more than 20 calling me love, & it was just horrible...........really patronising

I felt like saying,why am I your love,we have never even met before.

 

Same goes for Dear,Duck,Darlin & Swee'art

Mum HATES it when shop assistants come up to you and say "are you alright?"

 

She LOVES Costa coffee in Billericay where all the staff are youngsters but properly trained in customer service and how to address customers. They even call me Madam sometimes - although mostly they still call me Miss.

I don't mind really, I think it's quite a friendly thing. I am guilty of calling every child I meet 'Sweetie' because I can never remember their names What I do hate however is when people with whom I have a professional relationship bank staff, medical staff etc., calling me Tessa I always correct them and say "to you I am Mrs xxxxx"

Oh thank goodness, it's not just me.

 

In formal situations and when I don't know someone or haven't asked to be called by my first name then I prefer to be addressed as Mrs B...

 

I believe you should wait to be asked to refer to someone by their first name not use it automatically.

 

I think it all comes down to good manners.

 

My OH doesn't really agree and says I'm being difficult when I ask someone on the other end of the phone to not call me by my first name.

Cathy hates been called 'dear' even though she is, very (expensive)

 

She doesn't mind being called 'Our lass', she finds that quite cute.

 

I found being called 'Duck' hilarious when on holiday in Skegness, I was only about ten though, every time someone said duck I did!

I don't mind being called 'love' when someone can't be expected to know my name... but I do object to being called by my first name when I think people are being over-familiar - I was cold-called by an insurance company recently and the caller used my first name!

 

I still do a double-take when anyone addresses me as Madam, though - that's my Mum, not me (I'm still 17 in my head...).

I used to think that it was a northern thing. My Dad calls everyone 'girl' or 'queen' which at times is a bit odd especially when directed at my 65 year old mum-in-law but she thinks it's great and it makes her giggle.

I don't do it to adults though. I don't mind being called love, dear, darling etc in shops unless they are trying to patronise me.

 

For customer service people I find it disconcerting though when they ask if they can call me Patricia particualry when usually it's for something where they don't actually need to use my name at all.

I don't mind at all. I'd rather have someone pleasant serve me and call me 'love' than someone who is surly and won't make eye contact.

 

There's a lady in our co-op late shop that calls me 'love'. We got chatting one day, about chickens funnily enough, and now we're on first name terms and we always have a chat when she's on shift. DH goes mad as I end up holding up the queue in the shop!

I went to a christening today and we had to walk from the church to the reception as it was only round the corner. The builders on the scaffolding of a nearby building serenaded us with a few choruses of 'singing in the rain' it was quite funny

In the Potteries - (we won't be calling it that for too much longer!). It is quite common for people you don't know to call you 'duck.' It's not meant as an offence, just as a way of being friendly.

Only people who I hate calling me 'love' is builders. You always know that you are in trouble (as a woman) if a builder calls you 'love'!

I'm ok with dear and love and darlin, I think that for a lot of people it's not a conscious thing just part of their natural speech pattern. It's the over familiarity of using my first name that I object to.

I'm not keen on any of the "endearments" you mention Cinnamon, especially from strangers.

 

I especially hate being called "Dear".

 

In Sheffield you are likely to be called Duck.

 

It took me a while to get used to it, as I thought people were shouting a warning.
