I hate..................

Recommended Posts

Their quite old fashioned round here and I'm often referred to as Mrs T*****. I almost never respond to it, not through being narky but because I'm never called it - to me that means my ex-MIL

One old boy that was working on my house said that he 'couldn't' refer to me as 'Miss' because I have a child  I said, then please call me Clare... I am NOT Mrs.

I cant bear it when people ask me "is that Miss or Mrs _________?"

:D:D I hate this too. They usually say 'is that Miss, Mrs or Ms?"

Me too.

Yup - me too! why do they need to know what's my 'availability' status?

After all, they don't ask men if they are Mr or Master, do they?

I love Rhapsody's answer: It's Reverend - I normally tell them: "write whatever you want, I'm sure I've been called worse things."

Wow what a mindfield. You can't use someones first name because thats too forward and personal but you can't ask which title they would prefer to be called.

I'm going to start calling people OI from now on

To be honest I dont care as long as none of them are said in a patronising way and strangers don't call me a shortening or nicknme and that is too personal.

being brung in Tamworth I was used to Bab (I hated that term with a passion)

I know some one (she is 23) who calles older men "son" I see that as totally patronising :?

I know someone who calls everyone Dahl  dont like that much either.

I call very close friends honey, sweetie pie, lamb chop, as a bit of a giggle. and they (I hope!) see it as that.

some the little darlings at school called married teachers "Miss" and single teachers "Mrs" (they are just confused  )

I dont really mind what people call me (as long as it isnt an insult) if I feel someone I dont know is trying to be too familiar, I generally say something to drop them back a touch :D

it is weird moving up the country and listening to what is a local "term" and what gets

I once wrote a letter to a woman, and because I didn't know her title, I addressed it "Dear Ms X". I received a stinking letter back demanding that in future I ensure I addressed all correspondence as 'Mrs' as she had been married for 40 years and how dare I be so disrespectful

Meanwhile I am the same as ClareT - I shudder when I am referred to as Mrs as it reminds me of my MIL as well (and if you knew her you would see why it instigates such a reaction) - I am however very happily married :D .

I too am a nightmare for using endearments and being tactile. I simply put it down to my Mediterranean upbringing and never ever mean it offensively.

Me too Claire; I nearly bowled Lesley over when we first met off the forum and I hugged her. I just felt that I knew her very well. Lesley now makes sure to get her hugs when we meet up

The little lad next door comes round for hugs too - they don't do them there it seems :(

Oh how sad. I have a few spare he could have! We're very big on hugs in our family, except MIL who isn't at all comfortable with it once you get past the small child stage - she's only really touched me once in twenty years.

As for titles, I am Dr Cxxxxxx at school, or Miss for those children who can't pronounce it(!), Mrs Cxxxxxx at my children's school and to people I don't know well, and Helen to friends and family (and Forum). Like Rhapsody I find having an alternative title can be handy if people try the 'Miss or Mrs?' line, especially if they're being over-familiar or patronising.

I have never got on with Ms - I'm just not fond of the sound of it, although I understand why some might prefer it. Both OH and I are Dr - it can be a useful tactic to confuse cold callers!

I'm very tactile and big on hugs and cuddles! My mum said I was brilliant when my dad was in ICU as I kept cuddling him despite him having loads of tubes coming out of him. "Ooops, word censored!"ody else would go near him as they said the tubes freaked them out.

Art galleries are a terrible temptation as I'm always wanting to touch the exhibits!

I got Ian's friend in trouble once. We went out for a meal with his friend and his wife and during the course of the evening, I touched Ian's friend's knee, in a Parkinson type way. Apparently he got a good telling off from his wife when they got home, for letting me touch his leg!:lol:

Isn't it funny how we can be very particular about what we are called!

None of them really bother me, I'll answer to anything within reason  I'm guilty of calling people I consider friends as m'dear (no idea where that came from!) To me, it is a term of endearment. I'm also guilty of using 'love' or 'lovie' to be patronising if I think someone is trying to be snotty with me :lol:

:lol: Bronze - it still won't work! I did that to OH the other day when he was walking his usual 10 paces in front of me - he was most offended. I got "don't you dare refer to me as that again"

I replied "keep to my pace then" :x He did say dare . . .

What I don't like is when paying by credit card in a supermarket the assistant calls me Mrs Exxxx after reading the name on my card. I can't explain why but it makes me feel uncomfortable, that they are using my name without being introduced. Silly I know but.....

I don't mind being called love, dear, duck, m'duck etc so long as it is obvious that it is a natural use by the person and not added on purpose to be patronising.

I have a habit of greeting close friends with phrases such as "alright stinker?" and they respond in an appropriate manner!:lol:

What annoys me is people assuming I'm a Mrs now that I have a baby, even in the hospital people kept referring to me as Mrs R even though it is clear from my notes I am a Miss. I kept setting them straight but it was as if being unmarried was less acceptable....I thought those days were long gone?
