MariaB
Have had my chickens now for about 4 weeks and every thing has been going well up until tonight. One of the girls has spent most of the day in our hedge which joins our neighbours garden. When it came to going to bed tonight she still did not return to her house and we cannot find her any where. We called our neighbours to see if she had got through to their garden and they said they had seen her but wasn't in their garden any more. So I am assuming she has roosted in the hedge. Do you think she will be taken by a fox tonight. I realise her chances are fairly slim to survive the night. Is this normal as she has so far always put herself to bed with the other girls. I am worried about her.
daisymay
Hi I've just had the same panic but have luckily managed to find the stowaway in my hedge. Only had her since friday! Know how you feel as I was running about in right state. The way she had roosted I'm not sure any poss predator would've found her....it's only because we'd plucked her out of there earlier this evening that we knew where to find her. fingers crossed she'll be fine and be ready and waiting for you in the morning. greenchicken000
Let us know what happens, she may be high enough to be safe and back for breakfast in the morning - dirty stop out!!
Ain't Nobody Here
Try not to worry . A few people have posted about dirty stop out chickens who have sauntered back in the morning without a care in the world . Do let us know!
Janty
We couldn't find Mrs. Beeton the other night. She turned up in a large plant pot sat in the middle of the peas and canes. Since then it's been her favourite place to lay her eggs.
Abbey Road Girl
Gosh, had the same worry/panic as you when my girls first were free ranging. Turned out that the missing hen had somehow snuck into a (somewhat flexible) plastic cold frame. What a relief! Had to zip her out though! Even a small garden like mine has SO many hiding places--hope that your hen is in one of yours and comes back to roost (yes, an ancient history of that!). Best wishes! MariaB
Very sad today as our Ruby has not come home. Woke this morning hoping she was in the garden but there has been no sign of her all day and my OH said he thought he heard a commotion in the early hours of this morning so we have to think she has left us for ever. My daughter was really upset and has kept talking about what eats chickens. I have kept our other 2 girls shut up in their run today and they have not been impressed but can't take the risk of loosing another. Feel so bad that we could not find her and something horrible happened to her.
daisymay
What sad news. I am not surprised you are all devastated. I bet you did everything possible to find her. I know it isn't much comfort at the moment but if she had the opportunity to go off an hide she was clearly having a very good life. So sorry for you
Ain't Nobody Here
Oh dear, I'm so sorry . I really thought she would just be hiding somewhere . Bear in mind she may just have wandered off and someone may still find her. I know the worst thing will be just not knowing. Have a hug .... Ms Tilytinkle
Oh I am so sorry, i was hoping for the best, praying for her safe return. Abundant Blessings to you & yours. Still hoping she will return that shes just been a wayward wanderer. Fingers crossed. As ANH says, its the not knowing which is hard too. Janty
Pop a note through several neighbours door. One of our ex-batts escaped on Valentines Day. The neighbour at the back didn't know anybody who kept chickens so she got her husband to move her to a grassy area about 5 minutes walk away. Then she rampaged through several gardens before being captured by a man who took her to his Mother-in-laws. We got Mistletoe back even though she was 7 miles away. If you can't see any sign of distress...feathers, etc. there could still be hope. We were advised to call the police and local radio stations. The radio presenters had a field day with it, called themselves chicken fm for days afterwards and interviewed everybody concerned. It was OTT but as I said, we got her back in the end.
