Terry vs disposable nappies

Recommended Posts

I used disposables with Jack.

When Natalie came along I bought Kooshies.

The Kooshies worked very well and were easy to wash and dry. The only drawback I found was that baby tights or trousers are not generous enough in the bottom area for the washable nappy (obviously designed to be used with a slimmer disposable nappy) :? . This meant I often had to buy clothes a size larger to get her little fat botty in :D

Next are particularly guilty of this. Boots are very good, Mothercare not so good. Matalan are good, my girls can't wear their trousers in disposables, they fall straight down.

My DS is so skinny in the backside & hips when he came out of Motherease his trousers all fell down!

Braces or belts are NOT the best thing for a newly toilet trained little boy (he was turned three, straight to toilet, took me 2 days and three pairs of trousers, 2 prs of pants. If ever there was a reason not to toilet train children early, he's it. if you're cleaning up after them, THEY ARE NOT READY, and THAT'S THAT) so I now just buy the button and elastic waistband type trousers, he's 6 in July and stil in 4-5 yrs in trousers, he's got short legs too.

My Moltex OKO arrived this morning, Very nice it looks too. Will try it out this weekendk, and let you know.

My 13 month old is in Motherease too and I think they're fab, expecially the cute animals on the wraps!

Dungarees are usually more roomy around the bottom and have space for cloth nappies and now the weather is warmer, DD is in dresses (OH doesn't "do" tights :?). You can get clothes which are cut for cloth (cut4cloth is the tradename I think - you should find it on google), I've never tried them, because they are a lot more expensive than NCT sales, but if someone asks you for present ideas.....

We didn't start using cloth nappies until DD was about 4 months old. I decided not to give myself a hard time about anything until she was sleeping through the night. I must have been the only breastfeeding Mum who put on weight!

Good luck with the babies....

When big DS was a baby, I started a Nappy Laundry Service. I loved it! However 14 years ago it was a little harder to convince people to try them. The nappies I used then were very similar to the Bambino Mio ones that are around now.

My little DS (6 months old) has been in washables since he was a week old. I used Little Lamb nappies first which were great www.littlelamb.co.uk and now he has grown out of them I have decided to try some others. Swaddlebees (all in one style) look lovely, very trim but didn't seem to hold much when wet. Fuzzibunz are "stuffable" nappies, pretty good, and my favourites at the moment are Magic-alls, all in one nappies. I have recently ordered some Huggles, which are bulky, but excellent for night times apparantly. All these came from www.babykind.co.uk

One thing that drives me mad though is when other people say to me how bad they are for the environment, and that they leak etc etc. I always ask where they got that info from, and they get a bit vague and say they read it somewhere... none of them have even TRIED washable nappies either!

Hi, I just wanted to say that my boy is 10 months old and we've tried different things - the Moltex Oko nappies are wonderful! You can get them from Naturebotts.com or .co.uk I forget which. My friend and I order one full box each at a time so the postage is free!

I did try washable nappies but my boy managed to squidge poo out the side of almost every single nappy / wrap, it just got too messy!

The Moltex nappies are supposed to decompose in about 8 week - in ideal conditions they say, a wormery I think it was - anyway, they are super absorbant and easily last overnight on a baby who wees like mad all night.

Gosh, don't babies make you much less squeamish about bodily functions!

I was a skint 19 yr old when i had my daughter and wasn't wise to the washable one's other than terry's...but i hope to have an other child soon and will definatly be using them.

At "Aubergine" we have been trying to find a relatively local company's re-useable nappies and we have come up with this lot...

They have a massive collection which is good but coosing can be difficult..but they put you in contact with a user of them near you so you can get advise which we thought was good.

I love my twins in there reusable nappies, they are so cute. If you want to try some different ones which I find really good, look on www.nappiesbyminki.co.uk they are pocket nappies, which you stuff with a terry's or prefold, I use prefold nappies find them brilliant. There are quite a few other pocket nappies on the market, to name a few, bear behinds, wonderoos, fuzzi bunz. Once the pocket nappy is stuffed they are just like an all in one, but they are much quicker to dry.

If you want to know anymore on nappies I'd be happy to help.

We've just got a pack of blurb through the door from the council about all the recycling initiatives, and one of them is a real nappy campaign.

Midlothian Council are giving away free all-in-one nappies, or a £30 refund if you've already bought some.

Midlothian are a bit behind the times, recycling wise, so I would imagine that if they do this, other local councils will be doing it to - it could be worth all you new mums checking it out!

You're already 'saving' Annie, as you don't have to pay out for the latest toys, shoes (that only last a few weeks), and petrol ferrying children backwards and forwards to playgroup, pre-school, and parties.

:P:P:P

Honestly - some people just don't know when they're well off.:D:D:D

Oh believe me, I do!

Stayed out at a friends for a barbeque until the wee small hours this morning, got up VERY late and had breakfast in bed. Mucked out the animals, just showered and now off out for lunch in the sports car! Then round to friends for beer and football before falling early into bed tonight...

Just bringing this back to the top in case new forum members have anything to add - or anyone else has had more experiences....

I have spotted bamboo nappies on the market which claim to dry quicker and be more absorbent than terry / cotton reusables... any comments.. ??? :D

Also - Totbots have brought out a new "Fluffle" reusable that they claim dries as quick as a terry square... :?

I used Bambino Mio - and I still have the nappies and some of the covers in the loft if anyone wants to make me an offer?

One day I will get round to listing them on ebay or putting them in an NCT sale - where they apparently go like hot cakes.

I found them really easy to use - and I don't even own a tumble drier. There is nothing like a line full of clean nappies! Bambino Mio supply this soaking stuff that really gets rid of the stains - if you hang them out in the UV rays.

I even used them on holiday (in a cottage with a washing machine of course!)

You do have to be organised though.

Only problem we had was when Layla got a bit older and more active - we couldn't find a cover that fit her properly (she is long and thin) so we suffered from leaks when out and about at the park etc.

I haven't read the whole of this thread so I don't know if anyone has mentioned this but cloth nappies usually lead to earlier potty training as they can feel the wetness etc a bit more than with disposables. However, because we switched to disposables (when Layla was about 2 I think) we did not have this benefit - my friend's little boy - also a Bambino Mio baby - trained himself when he was only just 2!

I would recommend cloth nappies - and get into the habit from day one - we started using them as soon as we got home from hospital.

Enjoy your babies everyone! They grow up quickly....

I'm not so sure about this. My DS was three before he gave up his Motherease, and the girls are still in them and three at Christmas. Only the fact that they're going to nursery after will sort them out, it worked for DS too. Mind you, he was 100% safe inside 24 hrs of starting, and dry at night within a week, at 3 yrs. I believe if you're running round cleaning up after them for more than two days, they're not ready, as they don't have the bladder and bowel control.

I don't tumble mine, either. Washing line, either outside or over the bath.

I don't soak them, just leave them dry in a bucket and wash every two days. As white as the day they came, all of them, and some have done over 5 yrs on bums. Washed in Ecover at 70oC.

As you've probably gathered, I'm terribly lazy. But it's so easy, and cheap cheap cheap, too.

Thanks for this Happymama - good to hear as I will be starting sometime in the new year. Was a bit concerned about the soaking business and washing in Ecover - as I would like to continue using that. And we don't have a tumble drier so no choice re the drying

We're hoping to start a family soon and i have done a bit of research into nappies. I wasn't sure about reusables but then i saw an advert for these

http://www.modernbaby.co.uk and they look so cute (all kinds of different gingham checks) - i think if i had a baby i'd try them. I like the idea of not filling up landfill sites. Although the disposable nature boy and girl ones help the environment as well i bought some of them for my sister to go in a baby hamper when she was expecting.

Oh well, shall think about it some more if the time comes!

In preparation for the big day, I went to see Lizzie from Lizzie's Real Nappies last week to get my head round the various options. She is about 40 mins from my house, but her house is only 2 mins from one of my best friends - so I combined the trip with a cuppa and a good gossip :D

Following her excellent advice I have decided on a combination of real nappies to cover our needs. She also gave me the phone number of the correct person to contact at the council to try and get some money back. I had tried calling and got no-where and there was nothing about an incentive scheme on the website. So I will get £50 back!

1/3 Fluffles (from Totbots) - these are the quickest of driers, which is important to us as we have no drier and I wouldn't want to rely on one all the time anyway even of we did. They are very soft and absorbent. These can be quite bulky though and aren't made of natural fibre.

1/3 Coloured Totbots (terry not bamboo) - these are a medium drying time but much slimmer than the fluffles but with very good absorbency. And I wanted some fun coloured ones!

1/3 Bumbles - these dry the same as the coloured Totbots, but they are one size that will fit from birth to potty. I thought they would be bulky but they are quite clever in how they work and fold out easily to help drying. There is a layer of fleece next to the skin which helps draw moisture away.

I then bought Motherease wraps.

I will let you all know how I get along :D

(Due 2nd Feb, so might be a while yet)

Hi,

Just wanted to say that I used Tots Bots Nappies for both my children, and I can't recommend them highly enough, they were fantastic and really easy to use. Children look so cute in them, just like the fairy liquid baby, with their big fluffy bottoms! I tried many other types as well, but nothing compared to the Tots Bots.

Its lovely how enthusiastic people are about their re-usables - I've never come across a single person who feels as passionately about disposables!!

Thought I'd give an update now I'm over 2 months into it :D

We started the first few days with eco disposables, quickly moved onto real nappies during the day but the disposables at night and within 3 weeks were using real nappies all the time.

I have Totsbots Rainbows and Totbots Fluffles - the last stay lovely and soft in our horrible hard water and also dry super quick - we don't have a tumble drier so this is essential.

For wraps we are using Motherease Airflow with some great little designs on and at night Totbots fleece wrap - this actually helps the moisture to evaporate away so although her clothes feel a little "sweaty" where the nappy is, her bum is drier as a consequence!

I am about to experiment with Nature Babies stuffables, they are made in the UK and I want to have a super easy system that we can use when leaving Rose with someone else.

Incidently, Totsbots are made in the UK too, but Motherease are from Canada....

We don't even use flushable liners, fleece ones instead. It probably helps that my breastfed daughter only gets a dirty nappy every 2-4 days, I might feel differently if this wasn't the case :D

But anyone reading this thread and thinking about it - go for it 8) I think the important thing is to be realistic about what you will find easiest to use and maybe buy a couple of second hand ones of the different sorts so you can see the difference....

I started with (all nippa fastening):

Tots Bots Fluffles size 1: these are GREAT and have stayed lovely and soft in my hard water, also they dry super quick (not using tumble drier)

Tots Bots Rainbows size 1: these look fab, but have gone slightly hard due to the water, they are really easy to fit on though

Easy Peasy Bumbles, birth to potty: didn't get on with these at all, sold them!

Wraps were ME airflow, these were fab.

Once I'd got going, I added more to my collection! I don't get on with any aplix fastening wraps or nappies (except for red fleece tots wrap for night). The aplix always seems to curl, even when new, and dig in to DDs tummy.

I tried Minki Huggles, but they went so hard with the water that they are back for sale - these were great night time nappies though.

Now have Nature Babies stuffables too, both normal and lite. The lite ones are lovely and slim - but don't last as long between changes. These all have micro terry inserts which makes drying them and the inserts really quick.

Have just bought some second hand Fuzi Bunz, hoping they will be as successful as the Nature Babies stuffables......

:D

think I'm addicted
