Charlottechicken
Tonight at 8pm on ITV Sounds intriguing, Jonathan Maitland eats progressively out of date food. I must admit I am guilty of using use by dates as guides only, my eyes nose and tastebuds generally tell me what's off or not, but it looks like an interesting programme. Lesley
I'll go and watch that - Sky+ is playing up I've always eaten out of date food as long as it looks and smells OK
Cooks
I used to work for M&S and they sell their out of date food to staff in the evening.. so it has to be ok for a while after this date.. they wouldn't endanger their staff... well I hope not.. Cooks
it's funny becuase I daren't use any food past it's sell by date if the kids will eat it, however I will eat it myself/hubby or will happily cook it for the dogs
Phonix
I just don't get it - im sure people can make up their own mind. It seems a bit dangerous to me - i see them being sued when people get ill eating stuff past its use by date. Wouldn't they be better just advising people to only buy what they need (fruit and veg) and freeze any meat that they don't think they'll use within the dates! xXx
Egluntyne
Absolutely fascinating. What an eye opener. I did think the mince looked minging though and wouldn't have served that or the green bread to the family. The fact that the inappropriately named Mrs Green was throwing away in the region of three grands worth of food each year was astonishing. I imagine she is not alone I was horrified to see those perfectly good bananas in her bin though, they were only just ripening
Lesley
.....they would have made excellent Banana Bread - I must admit I don't like ripe bananas, but I will eat them in a cake. ....and, yes Emma, I do smell my food - and I'll eat things that Carl won't feed to his baby (the dog!!!) Egluntyne
I imagine she is not alone I was horrified to see those perfectly good bananas in her bin though, they were only just ripening Even Him Indoors pointed out that she could have made two banana loaves and some banana custard with them. I'm sure you are right about her not being alone., and I have been guilty in the past, in my pre soup making days. You can make a very decent Fridge Soup with the veg left over at the end of the week, and it is never the same twice. Three thousand pounds though! and I'm not singling her out for criticism......it just makes you sit up and take note! You could have decent holiday for that amount. Exactly, she is a product of our throwaway society. Most of the folk I work with behave like her, then moan about having no cash
Snowy
I missed this Football was on Sounds interesting. My friend brought 3 bananas round the other day asking if the chickens would eat them. I waited 'til she'd gone then turned them into banana bread I like your idea for leftover veg soup Egluntine I need to plan my veg shopping better! Lesley
I don't fancy Fridge Soup out of my fridge - nothing will make me go near a grey, furry orange That's the problem with unwaxed citrus fruit which gets pushed to the back of the fridge ....a dn now i have to change the filter in the water jug because that vile smell has permeated everything

Reikiranf
Thanks for that link Fred, I've just watched it I also hate waste and whilst I try not to buy more than I need I often use out of date things that have got pushed to the back of the fridge, well...... subject to the look and sniff test! I got home from work today and made a couple of loaves of soda bread using buttermilk that had a use by date of 2nd June Jonathan Maitland is made of stronger stuff than me though, blue bread
Laura & CTB
I thought it was very interesting and I have to say that it has changd my way of thinking a bit - I normally throw out anything as soon as the use by date is up. Now I shall think twice I thought him eating the chicken at a few days over was okay - bet he wouldnt have done it at 14 days over though!!
