Morning full of bad news and guilt - Updated progress

Recommended Posts

Went to see her tonight.. not sure if it feels better of not as nice to see her and she was really fine with me.. however the extent of the damage is not nice..

The op yesterday was several hours.. best case she keeps her thumb but has no movement and several more operations to graft skin and remove wires etc..

Worse case.. the thumb as to be amputated at the base.. will know this in 1 week as either the op to restore blood flow will work or it won't. very quickly.

In either case she won't be able to grip, write or use any kind of tool..

A week of nervous worrying ahead :(

Anyway hope I haven't bored you all but it helps to put it into the written word..

As she says thats horses for you but so wish he'd done it to me instead!

I am so sorry about your news. Sadly it is just one of those things and there is nothing you could have done to prevent it. After all your chickies arriving to a real downer. I'll let you have some of my elderflower champagne - if it works - to cheer you up! (Then I'll probably be writing on here to ask advice on how not to make other forum members ill with food poisoning!)

I hope you are feeling better after the shock, and that your friend is recovering well - it's amazing what they can do nowadays. I will keep my fingers crossed for her.

Hi Egg Lou

Sorry to hear about your friend and I wish her a speedy recovery.

I can only echo what every one else has said in that she wont put any blame on yourself. It was one of those things that unfortunatley happened to you both.

She sounds like a good friend and you must be kinder to yourself or you will wear yourself down.

Wishing you both well

Nette

Glad to hear you're friend is okay with you :) hopefully put you at ease a bit. She sounds a lovely understandable person.

So easy to forget how unpredictable horses are, big heavy animals they are and can do so much.

A couple of years ago a friend of mine was kicked unexpectedly by her horse, who's usually a lovely quiet guy. Got her square on the chin and she lost most of her teeth, and the lower half of her face was quite literally shifted to the other side of her head

Now apart from a few scars on her face you wouldn't know, they can do so much these days with skin grafts and such.

Best of luck to her with this week x

Hi All

Thought I'd give you an update as you've all been so kind, just sorry for delay but not been online much as not been quite myself and had bit of set back with my horse related injury :?

I have seen my friend quite a few times and although she has a great deal of pain she is coping well, at the moment the thumb flesh is still alive so looking like she may keep it :D I have seen pic and not pretty but does at least look thumb shaped, although it cannot move and a lot of the skin/flesh is still missing.

Feel a bit better now as been driving her around seeing her cope ok, although her Husband is still less than impressed. I am getting all her rings repaired as they had to be cut off so feel I am trying but know this won't change whats happened or that she will always have problems.

She is back at hospital tomorrow so please send your positive thoughts once :)

I have pretty much forgiven Oscar, although after having horses for 25 years and him since a foal it has really made me think about giving it all up as had a few nasty accidents in the last couple of years..

Its hard to stay annoyed when he did so well at a show yesterday.. he's first in two years as he had a major double leg op himself 14 months ago.

Although you can see how powerful he could be

Thanks for the update. Good news that the thumb may be saved, if not usable.

I'm sure she appreciates your friendship and help at this difficult time. I hope her OH isn't "less than impressed" with you :? . It wasn't your fault.

Oscar is a beautiful horse :) . It must be hard, knowing what he's done but again, it wasn't his fault either.

good news - and it sounds as if you're being a very good friend to her, although I'm sure you'd have driven her around etc. anyway. I hope her husband isn't blaming you - it wasn't your fault. Hope she continues to improve.

I have only just seen this topic- so sorry to hear about your friend and her husband's reaction. You are doing all you can do; at the end of the day, it was an accident. Anyone who is familiar with animals, esp big ones like horses, knows there is a risk. I used to go riding and hurt my back about 25 years ago - not badly but I still get twinges. But that is life.

Don't beat yourself up, keep being there or your friend but look after yourself (and Oscar!) too.

Hello Peeps

Glad to see your friend is recovering and hope all goes well for the next step. With regard to her husband, he probably has had to do some things around the house that he got away with before! He would be very silly to blame you. And Oscar is such a lovely looking horse. 8)

Thanks everyone.. you are all so supportive it really helps!

To be fair to her Husband it has really put him out as had to cancel business trip and ferry kids to school each day as well as doing everything around house.. so he's being ok under the circumstances.. don't blame him at all.. I would be annoyed at me too :?

Yes Oscar is lovely but good job I didn't post that pic when it first happened as would have given him to the first person who said so
