Morning full of bad news and guilt - Updated progress

...Something I would ask is was the lead rope wrapped round her hand or not?

....

that's something we were always told NOT to do at my riding school for this exact reason. I'm sure if she was experienced with horses she would have known this as it's a big NO NO where horses are concerned.

...thats my exact reason for writing that. Although as you put an experienced horse owner would not do this. Just a freak accident.

Egg Lou,

I just wanted to let you know you have my full sympathy. What a terrible thing to happen. I echo what everyone else has said, with horses these things happen, but it's so horrible for those involved when it does happen.

Also, when I had my horses, NFU were always brilliant, so you will be in good hands if your friend claims.

Best wishes and good luck to you and your friend,

Oh you poor thing, what a terrible thing to happen to all concerned.

I dont know anything about horses but you mustn't blame yourself, all animals come with that element of unpredictability. My thoughts are with you, BIG hugs and I hope it all looks better in the morning for all.

Even when I lead my incredibly gentle old boy round to the stable from his field (about 10 metres) I always make sure I don't wrap the lead rope around my hand as I too was taught not to do it. It is tempting when you are leading 2 or carrying something in the other hand but I always 'fold up' the lead rope rather than loop it.

Take heart EggLou, I'm sure she will not blame you or Ollie for the mishap...it could have happened with any horse.

Big hugs

xx

Very sorry to hear :( youmreally shouldn't bring the burden on yourself, although it is entirely natural. Freak accidents do happen, and it's just a part of owning horses and animals in general which i'm sure your friend understands.

It's so easy to get comfortable with an animal you've known for a while, and when something like that happens your first instinct isn't always to let go.

Best wishes to you and your friend xx

Thank you again for your kind words..

I do feel better than earlier but still so worried and don;t think anything will take away the guilt..

I still haven't been able to see her as theatre was delayed but spoke to her husband earlier.. the thumb was torn off but still attached and a live blood supply .. so they are hoping it can be saved. it does sound like she will have long term problems with it though even if all goes well.

He was a bit annoyed but ok under the circumstances.. have offered to ferry kids to school etc but not sure what else to do :(

Will be seeing her tomorrow with flowers etc once she is back home.

Oh .. and Oscar is absolutely fine just had a stern talking to as very worried about this happening to DD or anyone else!

Thanks again.. I had no one else to turn to earlier so really appreciated your support x

Just read this. Blimey mate  what a horrible thing to happen. You are going to feel guilty, if you didnt you wouldnt be the lovely person we all know on here. When my Welshie threw someone and she broke her shoulder I felt awful, even though I didnt know her very well and by all accounts she was riding him very unsympathetically, I still felt bad.

Horses eh? Who'd have 'em?

That's awful - agree with everyone else though, IT'S NOT YOUR FAULT! She will recognise that.

Can I also add that - although it sounds like a bad injury - these days they can do amazing things and hopefully she will recover very well. My sister had a door slammed on her hand some years ago and lost the tips of all her fingers - you wouldn't know to look at it, unless you compare it with her other hand and she has almost full function although obviously they're not as sensitive as before. Here's hoping for a good outcome for your friend.

good point olly, my DH had a (full) chemical drum land on his hand and it severed his middle finger almost completely. This was over 20 years ago. They managed to reattach it and he had months of painful physio but they saved his finger and he can use it normally. It just hurts in extremes of temperature or if I grab his hand (and I forget, which I do often!) it hurts a bit. To look at his hand, you'd never know though.

This was a long time ago, medicine moves on in leaps and bounds all the time.

Don't be too hard on Oscar, he can't help it if he was spooked.

Sorry, only just catching up with this thread. What a horrible accident EggLou, but, as everyone else has said it really was an accident and not your fault. I know what you mean about feeling guilty though, even though you're really not responsible you do end up feeling guilty because it was your animal that caused the injury, no matter how freak or unintentional the accident was.

I hope that your friend recovers well, and I'm sure you'll feel a lot better after you've been able to see her.

It will pass my lovely - really it will.

Just take each day at a time - and remember that it was NOT your fault - and it wasnt even Oscars.

Take things slowly and come back here for support whenever you need

Had update this morning..

She texted my from hospital. they do call this injury "de gloving" (think someone mentioned this) had long operation last night where they tried to reattach the nerves and tendons.. one of the two main ligaments has snapped also..

They are not hopeful about function as think she will lose this permenantly, however they are hopeful about saving the thumb inself so although it will be very scarred it will still look ok.. just unlikely to be able to use it :(

She was fine with me as said same as everyone here.. I am going to see her tonight as she should be sent home this afternoon.

Thank you for all your support I will pass on all your best wishes!
