Ain't Nobody Here
My neighbour asked me today if I eat the girls' eggs raw . She said she wouldn't eat supermarket eggs raw but wondered if my eggs would be salmonella free. I said I had never eaten them raw but presumed it was safe to do so. Am I right? (I must admit when she started talking about my chickens, I thought she was going to complain about something . I might have to give her some eggs .) Ain't Nobody Here
I know . I didn't get what she meant to begin with but she said she used to have raw eggs in various guises as a child (she's Greek, don't know if that's relevant ). She mentioned whipping up egg whites and icing sugar and using it as a sort of cream . So does anyone know how likely it is that our "free-range" eggs would have salmonella? Abbey Road Girl
I would guess that the answer varies depending on the flock and what it's been exposed to. Even though I don't drink milk, I would love to have some eggnog again. Just not willing to risk it.
Phosphorus
I eat my girls eggs raw all the time in the disguise of chocolate mouse Has to be raw for that Have never had a salomonella problem before and I must admit I have also made it with shop eggs a few times. For a big batch I have used 8 raw eggs before and had no reports of problems - I wouldn't advise a pregnant woman to eat it though. My kids (4 and 6 soon to be) also eat raw eggs all the time - we bake cakes and I am afraid much to Edwina Currie's horror, my kids always have the lions share of the cake mix bowl after the gunk has gone into the oven: loads of raw egg there. Don't worry - as long as they are fresh I think the risk is very slight. Oh and all my eggs stay in an egg skelter outside of the fridge

Snowy
I think most of the hybrids are vaccinated against salmonella aren't they? Either way, I let mine have raw egg - some people do like it don't they. We all eat cake mixture, and Dan actually likes the raw egg on it's own I'm much happier letting them eat our eggs than those from a supermarket. ..lay a little egg for me
Oh yes, cake mixture, mousse, mayonnaise, I eat 'em all. I even keep my mayo for days and days in the fridge and still eat it and have been absolutely fine! I believe the risk of salmonella in our mini flocks is pretty small (but don't quote me on that). Milly
We have eaten raw eggs - ie in mayonnaise (and cake mix), but I always use the freshest ones to be on the safe side. Although I'm not sure that would make any difference! Most hens from the bigger breeders are vaccinated, but I don't know how long this lasts, particularly as it relates to the eggs. Does anyone else know? Milly
