Guest
Fatima is sitting down in the run with her head under her wing? I've never seen her napping during the day before. If I go out she jumps up and appears normal and she's eating and drinking. None of the others are napping. With the longer daylight hours, they're more active for longer so I don't know if she's just tired or if I should be concerned. Does anyone elses chickens take naps during the day, head under wing? Laura & CTB
mine do too - a couple of minutes at a time but several times usually in the afternoon when they're out in the garden. When they've finished chasing round like maniacs they settle down next to the patio doors for a snooze.
Charlottechicken
Nothing to worry about if she is up and raring to go when you approach her, Poet Mine freerange a lot and often disappear for an hour or so in the afternoons, I find them half dustbathing and half asleep back in the run. They also go to sleep on the back door mat, and sometimes crash out on the lawn if it is sunny Edited to add, neither of mine sleep with their heads tucked in anyway, but if this is Fatima's normal sleeping position, I wouldn't be unduly concerned
Snowy
Mine too! I looked out the other day and there were 6 of them lying on the lawn, heads under their wings! Wish I could have got a picture of them, they looked so funny
Jules.
Buzz & Poppy sleep like that during the day. When they had access to all the garden they used to sleep right outside the patio door.
Stevie
Mine will often midmorning have a little snooze, but like yours will spring to life when they hear someone.
Gamebird
Mine often have a sleep under the oak tree on a hot day. They are up and about at 5am so it's not surprising they have to have a little chicken nap now and then.
Guest
thank you for the reassurance, phew! I think perhaps she's just an old lady who needs a nap sometimes. I made them a porridge out of soaked granary bread and activia yoghurt and she woolfed it down. I love my girls and I do worry when they seem not quite right

I love my girls and I do worry when they seem not quite right My heart always stops when they sunbathe as they're standing, then suddenly keel over onto one side. Abbie seems to have introduced a culture of lounging about which worried me at first. They often just sit down and rest whereas my previous chickens were always on their feet pecking round.
