mad.hen1
...the gingernuts or the pepper pots? Having just lost my lovely gingernut to a fox I am looking for another, maybe the same type, but am wondering if the differences in personality between my two girls was related to their type or to themselves as individuals. The red girl was really friendly, would be picked up easily, came running when you called etc. The black girl is more timid and very hard to catch! I would be really interested and grateful to know what other omleteers have found with their omlet hens! Thank you all and happy laying! Peachy77
We got our girls last thursday. out of the two omlet girls (so far) i would say the gingernut is the friendliest. We also have an amber star, abd she is by far the friendliest of them all. Hope this helps.
Snowy
The gingernuts are bred for the battery industry so are more docile, which does tend to make them better as pets. The black ones are bred for free range systems.
Stevie
Gingernut by far is the friendliest.
cluckbok
Our Calder Ranger is friendly (Gingernut Ranger) and will let you pick her up, she does get fidgety pretty quick but is lovely and will crouch for us aswell and we stroke her. But we also have a Columbine, who is the friendlist by far, she will sit on your lap and happily have a cuddle. We've never been pecked by any of ours, not yet! Must admit the most reliable layer is the Gingernut Ranger by far. Everyday without fail!!
Lovemychooks
Yes, my Gingernut Ranger is very friendly and the 12 ex-batts I have had were all really friendly and wouldn't leave your side for a second !!
daisymay
Hi My gingernut was the friendliest but the pepperpots have well and truly taken over and sit on my lap! Enjoy your new chicken(s) whichever ones you choose

Hen Watch
My 2 Gingernuts are very inquisitive and friendly. My Miss P is friendly but overpowered by the gingernuts. But then Miss P is my prettiest looking chicken.
Christian
My gingernut was the friendliest. My light sussex is the friendliest now
Abbey Road Girl
I only have Pepperpots and they are all lovely. I really do belive that you can be a hen whisperer. Maybe I'm just lucky, but they do seem to pay attention to you. Toss out a big sprig of broccoli and point to send the others in pursuit of the one who's got it, and they do respond. My Truffle and Biccie will come and sit on my knee, even if there's no visible treat. The four of them make a lovely flock! I wouldn't trade them for the world! There may always be the chance of a noisy or bullying bird, but the Pepperpots are gorgeous and ever so sweet.
ajm200
Our gingernuts are friendliest but there's not much in it. We have 3 gingernuts and two pepperpots. One gingernut, who stubbonly refuses to lay any eggs, follows us everywhere. Another helps with the gardening and appear between our feet as soon as we approach a flowerbed, but she is closely followed by one of the pepperpots. The 3rd gingernut refuses to have anything to do with us but some of her other behaviour make us think that her eyesight is very bad. The pepperpots will come when they are called, crouch to be stroked and tolerate cuddles but they aren't interested in following us about unless they think there's food available. The only drawback with the gingernuts is that they are far noiser than the pepperpots, Announcing eggs at full volume, shouting to be let out of the run if they spot us in the garden and boking to let us know they are ok. The Pepperpots are very quiet until there is a predator in the garden.
Abbey Road Girl
I just have to add that my Pepperpots were so lovely today, despite "helping" my son with a little maintenance work on the Cube early in the day. Later, they somehow managed to move the Grub a foot into the run without spilling any pellets. During the afternoon, while I was working in my garden and my builder was mending my coal store there, they were totally undemanding, going about inside the run with no verbal complaints. I don't know if I'm uncommonly lucky or if the Pepperpots are aliens from outer space.
