4m x 3m Omlet pen, cube, new auto door still boxed and coop light

This morning I went out to let my chooks out and Jalfrezi didn't xome out. I found her dead in the nest box.

 

Now, she looked really peaceful, but I didn't get a chance to inspect her. DH removed her (thankfully), and he said there wasn't any blood. I was worried I'd done something wrong, but he said "sometimes, chickens just die".

 

Is this true, or would she have died of something specific? I didn't see her last night, but OH says she was sat under the henhouse huddled up when he went to check on them, and then she was back in the house when he shut them in, so he didn't worry.

so sorry to hear about Jalfrezi. what a shock for you.

 

It could have been a heart attack possibly, it sounds like she went very quickly. There are lots of things chickens can die of, so please dont worry yourself you did something wrong.

Sorry to hear about Jalfrezi, Mrsm_jones. I think sometimes chickens do just die - possibly a heart problem? Are the others OK? If you haven't had her long maybe you should ring the supplier.

We've had her since around February, so not long really. She and Nugget were sold to us as Orpingtons with feathered feet, but I've since found out she may have been a cochin!

So sad, but at least she looked peaceful.

Sorry I can't really offer any explanation either, I just wanted to say I'm so sorry you've lost Jalfrezi and as everyone has said it was nothing you did or didn't do.

Sometimes it does just happen, and some girls just don't make it. It might not seem like much comfort, but at least she went quickly, not after a lingering illness.

A sudden death like that is likely to have been heart related.

Sorry to hear about Jalfrezi. I lost two of my girls early on in my chicken keeping and it's rotten. Keep an eye on the others but I'm sure that it was just one of those unfortunate things.

How sad . I'm sorry to hear that.

The same thing happened to our little Spice, one minute she was running around with spinich and happily scratching around with the others, the next she was keeled over in the run .

She musn't have been over a year old and we only had her for 9 months. She died of a heart attack (her comb was purple when I found her) she was absolutely fine before. As you say, these things happen and they tend to just die for no reason, it is very sad when it happens though.

Oh dear, I'm so sorry to hear about poor Jalfrezi . At least it must have been quick and painless for her .

Sorry to hear about this. One of my hens died unexpectedly in the nest box in the middle of the day when she was quite young, and it is such a shock.

 

But because it comes out of the blue, you can console yourself with the fact that there was nothing you could have done, as there were no symptoms on which you should have taken action.

 

I don't know if they go to the nest box when they feel poorly, or whether the strain of having an egg is too much for a weak heart.

Thanks again for all the kind words. It's sad to hear all your stories too, but glad that I'm not alone. I just hope Nugget doesn't take it too badly. The pair of them were quite chummy.

so sorry to hear your news - my Edith had only been with us from Omlet 3 weeks when I found her dead one morning in the nest box. But although I was terribly sad I knew she hadn't been ill as just the night before she had been scuttling about as usual. She will be in chicken heaven and clearly had a good life.
