whittlewitch
Talk about a jobs worth, never hear of anything so stupid. On the subject of petrol, these last 3 / 4 weeks I have filled up at Shell everytime, instead of the usual Tesco fill up, and i am getting considerably more miles to the tank. Now I have read this in the past, but never stuck to it, always ended up dashing to Tesco (sorry to keep mentioning that name) on the school run, but it does appear to make a difference. The claim was that branded stations Shell, Esso etc have additives added to their petrol, that the petrol the likes of T***o supply doesn't. As anyone else noticed this? Looney
Slightly off topic (sorry ) but someone told me that the picture of a petrol pump that you have on the dashboard of the car shows you which side your filler cap is.....if the filler hose is on the left on the picture then so is the filler cap! Don't know how true this is and I guess this is only useful if you have to drive lots of different types of car On the subject of filling up on the wrong side of the car, I always stretch the hose over rather than queue. It only hasn't been long enough if I have parked particularly badly (so on more than one occasion! ). Why didn't the petrol station let you fill up on that one occasion and ask you not to park the wrong way around in future??? Seems a bit daft to make you move. whittlewitch
Phil, I can see in your neck of the woods that not having a one way system might cause havoc, but where I live you often drive onto an almost empty forecourt, so it doesn't generally cause a problem, and there is not normally an obvious entrance or exit, so you tend to use which ever is more convenient. Its not that we haven't yet discovered the one way system, it just isn't necessary in most cases. Angela
Cinnamon
I don't understand their reasoning about cameras and number plates - BUT - I (for one) would be very irritated to drive into a petrol station the right way and find myself then blocked in by someone facing the wrong way and causing general traffic chaos. Phil, I wasn't causing any chaos by simply having my car facing the 'wrong' way I didn't drive in the exit & I sure wasn't going to leave by the entrance. Its a HUGE forcourt & it is a mini mart too, so theres plenty of space to turn - people do it all the time. I guess every petrol station is different - this one is very spacious indeed. Now,the van I mentioned DID in fact come in via the exit And while I am usually a very patient person who would normally queue up,I had to get home in a hurry that particular day & was running late. Not an excuse,I know, but there it is.
Egluntyne
Interesting how a woman was not "allowed" to fill up with the vehicle facing the "wrong" way, whereas a male van driver was. The attendant will have realised that Cinammon was unlikely to lamp him one, whereas a male just might.

Egluntyne
Yep...she's a sweetheart. Now if it had been me...or the chainsaw brandishing Omleteer it might have been a different story. Just kidding.
Guest
I don't complain unless I think i'll get something out of it. Life's too short, I mean, they're not going to give you free petrol or compensation or even a free mars bar The most you'll get is an apology. I'd just not use that particular garage again. Not saying that you're not entitled to complain, just passing on my POV like everyone else has done. These big companies couldn't care less about complaints, unless it threatens their business. Steve.
The solution is obvious. Next time just reverse all the way in. Just tell them you have to go everywhere backwards as the forward gears are kaputt.
chickenanne
I've reversed to pumps before, because I find it tons easier than anything else, and it's just daft that everyone waits for pumps for one-side, such a waste of everyones time. So long as you're OK at reversing and the forecourt isn't tiny, it's really no harder than going in forwards.

Louise
I can sympathise with most of this but there is one garage near my work I refuse to use as people will not use the one way system and every time I go there I get blocked in and have to reverse out The last time I had another customer blocking that way out who had a go at me for not getting out of her way I merely pointed out the only way I could get out without her moving from behind or the pratt that came in the wrong way in front of me was to use a tin opener I now realise life is too short for that particular garage The sainsbrys near here claims to have hoses long enough to fill either side but unless I actually stop on the pumps they aren't long enough I would have to climb across the seats to get out of the passenger door as well
cammy73
He was being a jobsworth!! If he was worried about you driving off without paying, which is what he was saying about not seeng the reg number etc, he could have charged you before filling, and you could have put X amount in and the pump would have cut off! Like they do on a night time in some gagrages... Sharon x
The Dogmother
With my old car, I used to be able to stretch the hose across to reach the other side, so could use any pump, but the filler cap for the van is halfway down the side of the vehicle so the hose won't stretch and I have to queue for a pump on the right side. You have my sympathy.

chocchick
My work Internet connection is pants, so late to the discussion. I was shocked. Especially about their double standard with the van. The nonsense about the one-sided numberplate. It is just common sense to start using the pumps that are empty, it is good for business to get more people moving through and you weren't blocking anyone. I've seen people do it loads of times. I'm disgusted.
MedusA
How frustrating! I would boycott that filling station on principle in future! Digressing to jobsworths in general.... Several years ago, I parked my car in a station car park. It had been snowing heavily and there was thick slushy snow covering the ground. I parked in a space as near to the ticket machine as possible and got my ticket. Having walked away, I couldn't remember if I'd locked the car, so went back. A car park attendant was writing me a ticket as apparantly I was parked in a motorcycle space. I explained that I couldn't have known that as the only information telling you that was on the ground and that the ground was completely obscured. I moved my car and went on my way. When I returned I had a ticket for parking in a designated motorcycle space!!!!! I wrote to the Penalty Office, explaining, but they still made me pay! Grrrrrrr. Louise
That reminds me of a parking thing a couple of years ago I went into the local town and it had been snowing I was the only car in the car park so parked from memory and went away shopping came back a couple of hours later to find everyone had parked following my lead and we were ALL outside the spaces as the snow had started to melt I went home hoping a jobsworth traffic warden wasn't on duty that day
