AAARRRGGGHHHH!!!!

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

needed somewhere to rant and you lot are generally good at listening and commenting so here I am!

Yesterday I was moving some stuff from my student house to my friends house (next year im moving into the smallest bedroom and all my stuff won't fit so need to remove some of it!). Had to use the sat nav as like you might have read in a previous thread im a nervous driver and not used to driving in a city, so when I got to mjy friends I had soo much stuff to move into the house that I completely forgot about the sat nav (i must have been in a world of my own because normally I take it out, take off the thing on the windscreen and then wipe the windscreen so no trace of the thing is left!). Anyways I left it in the car and a bit later on I sat down to watch neighbours that I had recorded (sad I know) and thought 'i'll have to get the sat nav out so X(my friend) can programme Ys (another friends) address in for me' I was going to Ys in the morning as she lives in Warrington and needed X to put the address in as its her sat nav and I can just about manage to turn it on lol! Anyways being a lazy "Ooops, word censored!" and thinking that the sat nav was in my handbag where I usually put it I thought id wait until after neighbours...

Bad idea....heard a bang but thought nothing of it as the kids are always going passed banging on the fences with golf clubs etc, then heard another bang and something made me look out of the window to see a derierre, legs and feet hanging out of the window of my (borrowed from my mum and dad) car!!!

I ran outrside but they'd legged it, the police came and were altogether HOT helpful basically they just thought it was my own fault (yes i know that it was but didn't need them to tell me!)

Some littler kids came over (the ones that broke in were about 12) and started going on about guns and knives and how scared they were but that these things were just 'normal' and I think that worried me more.

I spent my whole night worrying about the car everytime there was a bump or a noise (lots of them due to cats) thinking that someone was in the car trying to hotwire it :-(

So now I have to pay out for my friend a new st nav, a new windscreen and a new drivers window!!! ARGH! such a nice present for my mum and dad who's plane landed back from egypt in the evening yesterday :(

I know that it was my own fault for leaving the thing in the car but seriously it was broad day light and I could see the car from the front window of the house and the whole reason im staying with my friend is that I felt safer in her house than in my own student house over the summer while my 4 house mates are back at home!!!

AARRRGGGHHH!

(sory guys just needed a rant!)

oh no! Big sympathies Taj - done it myself, only I've been lucky enough to get away with it. When you've got a lot on your mind and you're rushing in and out with stuff it's just that sort of thing that gets forgotten.

Won't insurance pay for the repair? It probably won't cover the sat-nav though. Sorry to hear about this.

The insurance would cover it but im only 21 and just got my three years no claims to to claim on the insurance would put my premium up sooo such as im the first driver on the car and that wouldn't be fair on my parents as they pay the insurance (it their car) and it would probably go up by enough to end up costing more while i build up my no claims again than paying for it outright now :(

bad luck :( have done similar myself when I was younger, they tried to steal my car also (why I dont know it was only a banger) and must have been sisturbed as they left in a hurry and left behind a torch.... and a huge bill to repair the steering column!

Certainly the windscreen should not impact on your no claims you can usually claim for that once a year without effect due to stones etc flicking up and causing the glass to shatter which because it is dangerous you have to break the screen :?

Our car was broken into a few years ago via the drivers window.

We didn't report the theft ( not much stuff, the annoying thing was that they took my liitle bag of car park change that is in the ash tray  ) so that hasn't impacted on our no claims- we just claimed on the glass part of the policy.

I think it cost £50 in total, & the glass guy came to our house late that same night to fix it as the car was unsecure.

Maybe you too can do this, like Louise suggested?

well the police just called because a witness has contacted them who saw the kids actually break into the car so they're going to see that person later and scene of crime may want to come out and they also have another lead to follow up on and im quite surprised because I thought that they just wouldn't bother!

I called autoglass and like you said I can claim on the insurance windscreen/glass and it won't affect my no claims all i'll have to pay if the £70 excess! So im going to go for that when the lady there calls me back at 10:30 - its so difficult when you have to have a three way conversation calling her then calling my dad etc lol but glad its getting sorted and im not too out of pocket!

Some of my uni girlies in teh general area are coming round later to cheer me up and keep me company as I was supposed to be taking us on a road trip today so that should help lol

I know that it was my own fault for leaving the thing in the car

It wasnt your fault at all - you should be able to leave stuff in your car and it remain completely safe. It is the fault of the thieving scumbag who decided to pinch it from you!

It really gets my goat when you are chastised by people for leaving your stuff in your car.

*rant over*

Bad luck about the theft but hopefully you will get it all sorted. I had my stereo pinched out of my car a while ago, but the police caught the kid hiding in the neighbours garden. The stereo was a cheapo one and my car was damaged but I was just so glad they caught the little git that I didnt care!

I'm so sorry you've had this happen to you.

Last year it happened to my daughter, she had taken our shared car to uni as she was going down to Newquay, left the sat nav in and they broke the window to pinch it. She felt silly, but its just one of those things. I think we ended up paying to replace the sat nav etc as when you're young the insurance is so expensive.

Try not to worry about it. Have a good road trip :D

A tip (and no, I don't do this but I am going to after this reminder!) my friend keeps a packet of wet-wipes in the car, to clean the sticker mark off the windscreen every time they've used it.

Apparently even if you have hidden/removed the sat-nav, thieves will look for the round sticky mark that shows where it's been stuck to the screen and break in just on the off-chance.

Thanks for bringing this to all our attention, it's so easily done.

yep usually im soo meticulous about taking it out and cleaning the window where the sucker's been etc this was the first (and last) time ive ever forgot?!

I got autoglass out and they've replaced the drivers side window but ive got to wait until sunday for teh windscreen as they don;t have mine in stock

Its only costing me £70 as thats my windscreen/glass excess and not affecting my no claims thank god.

I still feel like a prize idiot

Really bad luck but I wanted to say what Stobie has already said - IT WAS NOT YOUR FAULT! It was down to the thieves, and in turn some responsibility must lie with who ever is "parenting" them, or not as the case may be.

I hate thieves, I've dealt with loads over the years and THEY are the ones who always have someone else to blame for their behaviour.

Glad to hear you can probably get the windscreen fixed and very glad to hear someone has had the guts to talk to the Police. I wouldn't hold out too many hopes of a satisfactory result mind you, even IF it gets as far as court (if they're 12 it's a bit unlikely) it's probably not going to be a huge penalty for them. The best result would be if they had parents or carers who were bothered and likely to offer to pay. Live in hope

I know that its not my fault as such BUT i did leave the thing in the car knowing what the little so and so's around here are like.

The worst thing is that the littler kids who came over to talk to me while i was cleaning out the glass and coving the gaping hole that was the window is that they're petrified where they live and that they talk about guns and knives and gangs as if its normal. I suppose growing up in a semi-rural area I never really had any worry of any of that!

The police did call and say they had a witness to talk to etc....but i won't get my hopes up. I couldn't not report it as I just think thats a total cop out - there's so many problems around here that don't get reported and yeah we get increased police presence but not at the times that matter so I don't report an incident that happened when the police where no-where to be seen nothing will change :(

My friend wants to move house now cos she hates it here so much with all the problems....thats going to be fun trying to sell her house :-(
