Flying at the window

Howdie chickenites.....

Just wanted to relay this funny story and wondered if anyone else has this. Our girls, one in particular have been hurling themselves at our kitchen window to get our attention and no doubt our sultanas. We've only had them for 6 days. Although it's funny now, I think it might get a bit dodgy in a minute, either by them hurting themselves or scratching up our window sill. Any ideas of how to deter this when it becomes unfunny??? I've turned the lights off in the kitchen so they don't see us but don't wanna feel like a prisoner in our own kitchen - also it's their bed time! Maybe they want a story....??

ps I am now ignoring them!

They are funny though, they came in the house earlier and jumped on my husband's lap whilst he was on the computer.

Any other stories like this would be appreciated, so we know we are not alone 8)

Blimey. I've not had this. But last summer my girls would all sit at the patio door and tap with their beaks for attention, and if I walked out of the room, they would all trot off to the kitchen door (which is clear glass too) and tap there instead. This year hubbie has penned them into their own section of the garden so no more window tapping which is a shame (but then also no more poo surprise at the back door either :D )

Yes I think they may end up with their own section if they carry on doing this. You should see them now, both on our patio table peering through the window. I think I will try to ignore them and if that doesn't work, I will get a blind - maybe better to pen them, but if we get something short (so as not to block off the garden totally) they will get over - guess I will have to see  it's like the film The Birds!

What prompted you to do that? Similar things?

I've just caught Gertrude walking along the top of the fence! She did this last night too - she's a rooster that one. I tried spraying them with water but it didn't bother them :?

Husband....... :( Not my idea. I loved them free ranging the whole garden and getting under my feet when I opened the back door. But when they got into his veg patch for the millionth time and munched through it he'd had enough.

So now they live here......

Yes I understand - the thing is you look like you have a nice wide garden. We have a very long narrow garden and they keep getting on the fence - in a minute they'll end up going over to the neighbours garden. They all love the chickens but one neighbour has 3 dogs (2 Jack Russells and a Springer) and the other is very grass proud, which I can understand and I don't want to get on their nerves even if they do like them. They were literally tight rope walking by the end of tonight. It would alo be possible for them to get to the road if they got over their gate as we have access along the back between gardens.

They were so naughty!

Mine can "fly/flap" over 4 foot fences but tend not to get over the 4ft omlet netting so far (except once, using the eglu which was too close, as a launch pad). I think it helps that the netting is flexible and cannot be perched upon.

Have your chooks had a wing clipped? The Omlet chap did my girls on arrival and I did the new one we got - it was very easy. 1 clipped wing gives them less balance for take off.

Yeah he clipped them when they arrived but they sure don't think they have had theirs clipped. I just hope they calm down. We have decided tonight not to give them sultanas for a bit as I think they're addicted and if we do, maybe only up where their eglu is. Honestly they go mad for them especially the one who is primarily hurling herself. I think we may have to move our bench - that will sort it as she is using it as a launch pad like you said. Oh well we'll see what happens I guess - they are characters aren't they!

Do they only do this when the light is on?? I have the same problem with my shed windows. They are attracted to the light and act like moths! I worry that they will hurt themselves and put them in the run before I switch the lights on now. I'm thinking I might have to get curtains for my shed!

Little monsters :roll::lol:

Trinny and Susannah both flew at the window. The first time was when they were very young and flighty, the other was just launching off the fence into the window. We had a chicken footprint for months as never got round to cleaning it off  and it was funny

Trinny used to perch on the chickenwire fence and peer down at us through the living room window

Hi Ladies

I have also put up Omlet fencing! however one of my girls( fauna ) GNR very smart! always manages to squeeze through somewhere somehow and comes it the patio door to the kitchen and scoffs the cat food much to the disgust of my 2 cats. I then have to put her back and watch her for ten minutes to work out her latest escape route and block it off I do this sometimes several times on a daily basis. If the door is closed which is not often she tap tap taps on the door too! She is the smallest lowest in the pecking orderbut definately the smartest of my girls :D(pink eglu) + (cube purple) 4 GNR and 1 PP

I nearly chopped my finger off preparing veg, when Blackie suddenly appeared (with a lot of noisy flapping!) on our 4 foot plus high kitchen window ledge. She then proceeded to hurl herself at the back door window where OH was on the other side painstakingly gloss painting the frame!

Both girls also peck incessantly at the patio door, particularly if there are rain drops on them - we've found that closing the curtains helps, it doesn't stop them exactly, but they do get bored more quickly!
