Egluntyne
The Tinsley Towers in Sheffield....much loved landmark on the M1, are to be demolished in the early hours of Sun 24th August. **Here**. Sad...as Sheffielders knew they were nearly home when they came into view. Point of interest, the M1 will be closed for 12 hours between J 32 and J 35 if you are planning a journey Oop North that day. Seagazer
I saw that they were to be demolished I think on The One Show - there seem to be divided opinion as to whether they should stay or go. I love Battersea Power Station but can understand that some people don't like the look of it.
Tina C
What a shame. We lost our cooling towers some years ago. When I was moving up here from London I knew I was 'nearly there' every time I saw the towers. There is now a gas fired power station on the same site and I have grown to love it (it reminded me of an elephant from a certain angle when it was first built) but I still miss the towers. Omletina Kyckling
Mum told me about it, it'd been in the paper and on Look North. I will miss them. They are a real landmark, if not very pretty!! I was always told that they couldn't demolish them as the double deck M1 bridge is too weak and it could collapse I thought that was why they had made it two lane at that point a few years ago too. Obviously one of those old wives' tales! When I was little I used to be quite scared of them as they are right next to the motorway and tower above you and I used to hide, but now I see them when I'm heading north and know I only have a couple more junctions before I turn off when heading back to mum and dad! Apparently they are opening all the Meadowhall car parks so people can go and watch (traffic bedlam if the M1 is closed!!)
MedusA
I lived in Sheffield in the mid 60s and remember the towers. There was something on the TV about them the other night. I had thought there was a possibility they might be saved. Sad to hear they are definitely going. Will you watch, Egluntine?
Egluntyne
I was always told that they couldn't demolish them as the double deck M1 bridge is too weak and it could collapse I thought that was why they had made it two lane at that point a few years ago too. Obviously one of those old wives' tales! Apparrently not! It is only recently that the technology has advanced sufficiently enough for them to do it safely. Even so there is a risk. . It will be a trifle inconvenient if it goes wrong and demolishes the Motorway and the A thingummybob wotsit below. As it is there has to be testing done before the roads are re-opened. When the MI was three lanes at that point, it was only 9 metres away from the nearest tower. Bad planning. No...I won't be going to Meadowhell at 3am. I will be able to hear the bang at Egluntine Towers.
Egluntyne
They've gone. **Article and video here**
Guest
Watched them go on the BBC this morning - they said thousands turned out! Dunno why I think they are barmy- remember I got up at 4.30am on holiday to watch us sail into New York - me and every other passenger on board! susanbb
Saw it on the news, but it was also on our local radio news.

I remember the old power station and yes they were a striking landmark.Funnily enough, that was where several scenes for the original Tim Burton 'Batman' movie were filmed and the nearby A428 often had the Batmobile tearing up & down it at night for more scenes. I see cooling towers as our industrial heritage and should be saved provided they're structually sound.Battersea in particular should always be saved. I used to work at that power station when they built the CCGT bits (the gas turbines that you see the flues from). There are still cooling water bits they are just much smaller and more environmentally friendly. As a kid I used to canoe in the River near the power station and we always used to joke the water was warm enough for an alligator to survive due to the heat pollution!! Chicken Licken
Gosh - we could almost have a Gt Barford omlet meet!! Perhaps the riverside park in St Neots!!!
MedusA
Thanks for posting a link to the video, Egluntine. As you say,"end of an era".
Omletina Kyckling
Gosh, that was impressive stuff, thanks for the link Egluntine...I love the way the news reports have all concentrated on how the north tower "failed" to drop - the BBC has a comments question on their website asking people to comment if they were delayed on the M1 due to the failure of demolishing both towers. Why, oh why do they have to always concentrate on the negative? I'm heading north next week and will pass by this area, I'm feeling quite sad about them not being there as I always knew when I got there that I would turn off just after them to head across home.....
