kayandrob
How do you attach them? I have bought some bungee clips from B&Q only got 3 at the mo as they didn't have a fourth in stock, How do I attach the curtain to the run?
SAB
I just used some extra clips I had from Omlet - made a small slit in the curtain at the point I wanted the clip and then clipped to run. We did it as temporary measure as I did not have bungees to hand, but have stuck with it. I am sure that the curtain will eventually rip at these points but, despite high winds and rain, they have not done so in the past 3 months or so that they have been on. Ain't Nobody Here
In my early chicken-keeping enthusiasm, I bought a kit for making eyelets in my lovely new clear plastic sheeting bought from Dunelm Mill. Took me ages. Secured them to the run with cable ties. First strong wind most of the eyelets ripped off . I now use corrugated plastic sheeting with bungee ropes over the top. Sorted! Donna_0
Hi there, For now I'm using a plastic sheet and attached it on with washing pegs! I take the sheet off when its not raining, but this is okay until I have some more spends to get something better! - Barbara 28/07/08 -Margot 04/08/

The Spencers
ANH - Where did you get the corrugated plastic from?
frenchlayer
You should be able to get it from B+Q or somewhere like that. It should be around 10-15 quid a sheet, 2m x 1m I have a spare piece in my garden at the mo, but I don't it would be worth the trip to come and get it! Electricbarbarella
I have the actual curtain hooks on the end that the door is on, then the shade on top and the bungee cords fastened togther all the way over the other end. I have left mine on all the time as I have aubiose in the run although i ewoul like to take it of on nice days. will have to sort that out. cathybc
I have bungee ropes around the middle and pegs at the edges....has worked OK so far
Ain't Nobody Here
ANH - Where did you get the corrugated plastic from? I did indeed get mine from B&Q but it was only £6 for a sheet . I think another Omleteer got theirs from Wilkes which is possibly cheaper. If you get the 2m x 1m length it's not quite long enough for a run plus converter so I've put a bit of shower curtain over the gap. Edited to show you:
Mutrix Farmers
I have a shower curtain that I'm going to use in the winter to protect the darling girls from draughts. I plan to attach it with bungee ropes, pegs, cable ties, anything that I can think of really. I do like ANH's corrugated plastic though! The Spencers
Thanks for the kind offer Frenchlayer. Brittany might be a bit of a trek from the North West though. You've opened the memory gates though - I spent a very happy year at the university in Rennes some years back. ANH - Great picture. It has provided some inspiration for what to do for our first winter. I'm not sure I have the requisite skills for a homemade walk-in and certainly not the cash at the moment. Thanks for the help

jules.chuck
Like the picture of the run I was just wondering do the chcikens get too hot ? Do you have them in shade ? Also like the sticks and things you added where have you sourced them from ? Jules
Ain't Nobody Here
How & how often do you clean it, You do mean me?! Every 6 weeks or so, I lift the whole run and eglu onto the grass (with help from ES). Remove the top couple of inches of hemcore/soil to the compost/flowerbeds. Sprinkle down Stalosan F and garden lime (counteracts the acidity of the poop), then a new layer of Hemcore. and how many chooks live in this trendy abode!? Three - Milly, Molly and Maisie! I was just wondering do the chcikens get too hot ? I remove the plastic if the weather is good. Only takes a minute or two with 2 people, but is possible with one too! Do you have them in shade ? I have the sunshade on under the plastic now. Also like the sticks and things you added where have you sourced them from ? Sticks from the woods. Ikea shoe racks from a skip down the street! jules.chuck
Thanks ANH I think it looks like a good idea for my as we are nearly on the sailbury plain and have a south facing garden. This means we get loads of sun loads of wind and at the momment loads of rain! So I don't want the eggs cooked before I get my hands on them
Ms Marple
Reaaly useful info ANH - thank you. I think I will buy a run extender from Omlet then try your corrugated plastic idea. We hope to build a walk- in run but only AFTER the builders and their chaos has finished. I assume the Stalosan goes onto the new bedding? Hen Watch
I use 6 bungee cords to secure my shower curtain and it has never come off in extreme weather yet. I just plonked the shower curtain on the run, the bungees have hooks which I hooked onto the run on either side. Except I could only find short bungees so I ended up linking 2 together to go over the run. So here's a pic of my set up with the curtain secured down in 3 places.
