tenzin
What experiences have you guys had with you're cockerels crowing and complaints from neighbours ? Do you know the laws . Is it fine to keep cockerals in town providing their kept quiet till after 9am
chelsea
I dont own a cockerel, but I do know that cockerels crow all day, so even if your neighbours are up after 9am, crowing all day might get on their nerves! It wouldnt worry me as I love to hear the sound of a cockerel, but I dare say most people dont. If you are in a town with very close neighbours you might have potential problems. jomaxsmith
It would get on my nerves, and I love chickens! Jo
tenzin
It amazes me how we all except people playing music loud , cars driving past revving their engines , aeroplane's flying above at all sorts of times waking us up . Dogs barking Kids screaming , police sirens . Yet cockerels are basically frowned apon
jomaxsmith
No, all those things would annoy me too! But, those things are generally occasional one offs. I'm pretty sure cockerels crow regularly thoroughout the day. I'm also sure that generally hens are happier and healthier without being constantly bothered by a cockerel too! tenzin
Do you honestly think a flock of hens wouldn't enjoy a cockerel for company
jomaxsmith
Honestly? No - I don't think they enjoy the constant attention but then I have no experience so can only go on what I've heard! Jo
moomin
You sound like you're intent on getting one tenzin Go on, go for it - see what the neighbours say. (but I would have a home lined up for it if it doesn't work out - for the cockerel's sake if nothing else!).
Stevie
I grew up near a farm so hearing cockerels crowing dont bother me at all cos we also had to put up with cows moo'ing, sheep baa'ing and we regulary had male Peacocks strutting their stuff in our garden! Someone round here has a cockerel cos i can hear it when i walk my dog early in the morning!
moomin
Likewise Stevie - it wouldn't bother me!! But I live in a village made up of 90% old folk! If I kept a Cockerel (much as I would love one ), I suspect they would have a lot to say about it! Their lawnmowers going at 8.30am on a Sunday morning wouldn't come in to it

I would like to add to the list - deaf neighbour who shouts (and swears) at everyone and everything! Don't you need a licence to keep a cockeral in a built-up area? Local Council would be able to advise.
tenzin
This is what I'm trying to gauge mate , from the little I've managed to find out it seems , each and every council deal with cockerels differently . Think if someone was to put a complaint in , it goes along these lines . Council come round to check on property and coup Then they ask what time cockerel stats crowing and what you're trying to do to prevent noise early . They then advice you to what they will or will not except If a complaint persists , they bring in monitoring equipment and listen to the levels of noise pollution . Some councils may just tell you point blank to get rid of your bird though . I will do whatever possible to play ball and keep a cockerel , but i dare say some folk that have plenty of time on there hands siting on there backsides will cause grief
