Camping!

Recommended Posts

Hey

I went camping at the weekend.

There were about 13 of us all 21 so trying to find somewhere was a nightmare.

We're from just outside the lake district so tried to find somewhere there but everywhere has strict rules about groups of less than 5, unless its a family with 2 adults and the rest children or if they allow groups as soon as they ask age they then refuse!! ARGH

Above that the only places we could find had a ban on noise after 10 which basically meant silence - we ended up on one of these ones in an area that we didn't want to be in - we wanted to be in teh lake district.

We ended up in Tarnside - beside the sea which was sooo cold and windy! We had a fab weekend but got really annoyed when we were told about noise levels when we'd went to teh beach at 9,30 and came back in small groups so we didn't disturb anyone - we realise that tent walls are thin so conversations can be heard, even if there was only one other tent there and it was quite far away! If we were noisy then fine tell us and we'll try harder but teh next night we went to bed early as it was raining and we couldn't go the beach ans sit outside (also we were holding the tent down by being in it!) and all night there were people running around screaming and shining their torches in our tent!!!! When we told the site manager he basically just said oh well it was a family!

So basically if you come with a family you can make as much noise and disturb as many people as you like by being rude but if your in a non-famiily group you have to stick to the rules!!! I was NOT impressed!!!!

However, company really does make the weekend and even with teh problems and bad weather we had a fab time!

Did anyone else venture out camping over the bank holiday weekend? (Next time i might have to persuade everyone that a very long southward journey is the best option!)

glad you had a good weekend, i can imagine how difficult it was to find a site with a large group. this site is a very good site for finding campsites and has a search facility

I would maybe look for a more "basic" site in the future, some of the sites that allow campfires (usually a farmers field) tend to have less strict rules. The commercialised sites are the ones with the "you cant do this/cant do that rules".

We went away in our caravan to Glastonbury, it was lovely and quiet as it was an adults only campsite so in the school hols its ideal. Even better the fact is that i've sprained my ankle so i was able to order hubby around!

haha chelsea sounds like you had fun! ooww on the sprained ankle front though! hope its better!

I wanted to go somewhere with showers and toilets as i do object to the lack of those lol! Im quite good at back to basics but my hair just doesn't realise it and seems to think that it can get as greasy as it likes even 2 minutes after I use teh dry shampoo!

lol, I know what you mean about hair.

When we camped (before caravan) I took hairdryer, heater, etc with me. One weekend when it was the FA cup final we even took the telly! We camped for many years but I got fed up with being so cold and wet and staring enviously at the people in their warm caravans!

The british weather doesnt help either.

hope you have fun on your next trip, check out that website and you might find one.

I've experienced this as well. We were threatened with eviction the moment we arrived at a site  We were treated like criminals/thugs/no goods before the tents were up yet it wasn't us that made the noise but the group of parents sat around drinking and shouting until the early morning once their kids were in bed. Needless to say they weren't evicted

I agree that the company makes the camping more enjoyable, we try and meet up with uni friends every year and camping is a good, cheap option. 8)

I agree with the treated like criminals/thugs bit!

One guy on the campsite was really nice but everyone else seemed to think that as we were a big(ish) group we were trouble!

I mean we couldn't have been nice - we took our noise to the beach at night just to keep out of the way!

And as for being nice we helped the people just arriving in the awful wind and rain get their tent up while all the nice families just sat around in their awnings having a drink and watching!

I whole heartedly agree! The attitude of campsite 'managers' is so annoying and pompous!

Yes I am tarring everybody with the same brush!

We went camping last month and although we didnt want to go in school hols we had to as it was part of present to Mum. Tickets to see Jools Holland at Alnwick Castle. Anyhoo, we were staying on campsite and Mum and stepdad were bunking in with us for one night (which they had to pay a whole £30 for even though they were in our tent and had to park miles away in car park!

On arrival, when I gave my name Mrs Allen at the reception I was told I looked too young to be married!?! Random! After a 5 hour drive I wanted to say you look too old to be living but I bit my tongue. Even though we had paid a lot to camp there we found we were treated as second class citizens compared to those with caravans. They had packed all campers at the back of each caravan basically so the morning view was the back of a caravan and a ford focus! GREAT! Everything we did was wrong and we got so much hassle. The dog was eating outside. Apparently this could attract rats!? It was 9.30am and he was having his breakfast in his bowl!? We parked the car at the wrong angle? It drove me barmy! Just for us we spent £90 for 3 nights on a campsite. Plus another £30 for my Mum and stepdad for 1 night! Absolutely mental. We stayed with a very known company as well and their motto is 'The friendly club'! what noone ever sees is the small print which reads ' ...but only to those with caravans!''

Get on the continent Phonix! So much better weather, sites and cheaper! Even with airfare!

Blimey  that was one mega expensive campsite  I'm in shock!

Fancy saying you look too young to be married  what a strange comment to make

We booked to stay in a camping barn in Yorkshire last year. There were about 12 of us, all couples, all in our late twenties. The owner treated us like we were totally irresponsible. We had to beg her to give us two sets of keys so that we didn't all have to come and go at exactly the same time. It took three separate attempts to get them off her - her reason for refusing was that she thought we would lose them! Such irresponsible campers.....she should have seen us all sat in the living room sipping our cups of tea and eating home-made cake and biscuits, or cooking a proper breakfast with free range eggs, home grown toms and home-made bread. I mean, how wild can you get!:lol:

Saying that I've also been to great campsites with absolutely lovely owners. Shame the bad ones tend to stick in the mind
