Rehoming Request - NOW REHOMED

Recommended Posts

Hi All

Unfortunately I have to try and rehome my 4 hens. I hate to do it but they have just got so noisy and for the past two months have started squawking at 5am constantly. I've lost sleep and have had complaints from my neighbours.

Therefore, if anyone can offer 4 excellent layers a good home then please contact me urgently. I have two Gingernut Rangers and two Miss Pepperpots. One Pepperpot is about 2 years old and the other 3 are only about 6 months old. All were purchased from Omlet and are in very good health and I get 3/4 eggs every day.

I feel awful doing it but I've tried everything and I know there are some good hen owners out there who may be able to help.

Thanks

Pinky.

I can ask my uncle for you - he has a farm/smallholding in the Sleaford area...it is a typical farm though - no frills but lots of food s"Ooops, word censored!"s (usually my sandwiches  ) to supliment their grub plus free range everyday... up to you.

He's had the same cockerel for 12 years now  so I think he's doing something right! They have about a half acre of electric fenced paddock now and a 10x5ft coop (approx). I think there are about 6 hens there at the moment who are all getting on a bit so if he's willing to take yours on they would be the youngest ones.

Shall I call him?

sorry your having to rehome your hens.

I dont know whether you have tried this (so ignore me if you have!), but do you shut your hens in at night? My lot are noisy girls and by shutting them in at night and letting them out at a reasonable hour stops the noise at 5am in the morning. Also covering the cube/coop in a dark cover helps as the hens are kept in the dark for longer. As we are getting towards darker mornings/nights they should be getting quieter now.

I hope you find a solution. :)

I'd love to take the 2 younger ones, my own Omlet hens must be abput the same age, only problem is I am in St Albans. ( I lost one of my Omlet ones 2 weeks ago, and was thinking about getting 2/3 more.but didn't want very young ones, yours could probably hold tgheir own after a few days.

Hi - yes I had tried shutting their door and covering their house but they still squawk. I've also tried food, a water pistol (which made them squawk more) but they still do it. My neighbours have been really good but it's getting too much for all of us now.

I wouldn't be able to deliver to St Albans as I only have a Smart car and that wouldn't be fair. I would also like to rehome them together if possible.

They are currently residing in an Eglu cube.

Thanks again everyone for your interest.

My Dad knows someone who has hens and he might be able to take them but if anyone wants to come and pick them up you are more than welcome. I do not want any payment for them I just want them to go to a nice home.

Poor you, I do sympathise about the noise problem. My neighbours have called the Environmental Health in and it's become a bit of a nightmare. Under threat of an abatement notice though, I have managed to keep them quiet by covering the entire run and the back of the cube (seems particularly light permeable) with blackout picnic blankets. They are quiet until I let them out at 7.30 (the time I am required by EHO to keep them quiet until), then they just dive into their food and are not noisy until much later then, and only intermittently.

Have you thought about rehoming just 2? I know I only had a noise problem when I increased my flock from 3 to 6.

Good luck whatever you decide :)

i also black out my Eglu as right from the start I didn't want early risers or bullying in daylight.

I also cover the front foot or so of the run with a blue tarp(seems to stay darker than others) this keeps ot darker in those little peep or air holes at the front. The Eglu does seem to let lots of light in. I read people putting curtains to keep nest boxes darker to discourage egg eating, So covered as I said from early on and as long as I am quiet they stay quiet till I let them out.

I wonder what the neigbours do about the wild bird noice, the pigeons, the noisy cars! Do EH make the bin men come late too, ours start at 6 very noisy!!!!

Poor you. good luck, keep us posted!

I do exactly the same using the picnic blankets and it does work.

I also agree about size of flock, when we had 2 chooks there was no noise, now we have 4 they bok bok to each other from one side of the garden to the other!

Hi All

Thanks so much for all your help and advice I'm so grateful.

I've now rehomed my girls. They've gone to an Orchard and will free range all day. Much better than I can offer them.

The garden looks so empty without them. I'm gutted they have gone and it's the hardest thing to actually drop them off with someone else. I will get hens again in the future - when we rehome ourselves to a property which isn't so crammed in with neighbours.

Best regards

Pinkyx

Well done tinsel, it must have been very difficult but like you say they will be happier there and less stress for you.

I hope you guilt trip your neighbours now by saying how you didn't realise how expensive eggs were and its so lonely without them.

Im sure one day you will have more. Best wishes
