Mixing an ex-batt with two settled hens, good or bad?

Recommended Posts

Hi there,

I have been looking out for a second hand eglu to buy and while I have been waiting have had my name down for 3 ex-batt hens, rescue date 15th Oct.

Things never go to plan and today I picked up my second hand eglu with the added bonus of two lucky ladies coming with it. A Light Suffolk and a Warren.

I am now wondering if I can still get a third hen to join these two? Will and ex-batt be two weak and feeble to withstand them sorting out the pecking order or will it be over with quickly? Should I just get a normal POL Hen that is more able to stick up for itself?

Does anybody have any experience or advice with to help with a situation like this?

Normally the BHWT won't rehome just a single ex-batt, and to be honest , it isn't a good idea to put just one in with an established pair for the very reasons that you mention.

Introducing one hen isn't always easy anyway.

Have a dekko at **this thread** for some advice on managing intros.

Good luck. :D

Thanks for that,

my gut instinct told me that but I was just hoping all would be peaceful just so I could have 3 as planned.

I will wait untill I have a second run to use to introduce anymore hens before I consider enlarging the flock.

Thank you.

thank you,

you seem to have a lot of experience and advice so I will be guided by you.

According to the forum you seem to be the Obiwan of chicken info.

On a completely differnet subject do I have daft chickens or do they all enjoy getting wet?

It is raining really heavily non-stop but they won't stand under the shelter, is this normal or are they just upset from the move?
