Sickly(?) chicken

Recommended Posts

Bit worried about one of my chickens, she has been laying normally except for a couple of days without eggs and that she spends 3-4 hours on the laying bit. When I let her out this morning there were 2x thin shelled eggs and she has been on the laying thingy for about 7 hours now. Is she ok?

Hi Neil,

I'm sorry I can't be of much help here as I don't have enough experience! Has she just come into laying normally or could she be going into a moult? Does she need worming or extra grit?

What you really need is Egluntine to give you some advice! If she is not around read some of the other posts and I am sure you will probably find similar topics.

Hope she perks up soon.

Thanks Jackie. Egluntine, where fore art thou?

I'm getting really worried now, Nugget is just sitting there and when you move her out of the eglu just flops to the ground. Her "chest" felt very enlarged and soft yesterday, now today is enlarged and very hard. Now I'm not much of an expert but I'm wondering whether she has an egg blockage or anything??????? This may explain the 2 extra thin shelled eggs the other day. Any ideas!!!!!

Thanks

Neil

No experience of this I'm afraid, but it sounds like it could be an impacted crop. Until Egluntine gets here, there are a few threads you could read to see if you can diagnose her yourself:

She sounds rather poorly.

The flopping to the ground doesn't sound good.

It could be any one of a number of things, but to be honest I think I'd get her to a vet first thing.

She sounds as if she needs more than home treatments.

Meanwhile, try to encourage her to take some fluids. If you have a syringe, dribble some sweetened water into her beak if she is reluctant.

Good luck and let us know how you get on.

Hi Neil,

How is Nugget today? I've been quite worried about her

Hi Jackie

I've been giving Nugget some anti-biotics provided by the vet and some de-worming liquid. There is no way on earth that I can syringe it down her throat as recommended but she gobbles down the muesli that I hide it in. Her daily eggs haven't started again but she is up and about and acting like a chicken should, so that is good.

Thanks for your interest.

Neil
