However I have to disagree with you about Prince Charles, He is into greener living, fairer trade, living off the land, making his own income,

 

Making his own income? With half of Cornwall which was given to him? Hardly 'making his own income', is it, when he has people to employ the people to tell the people what to do to make the income.

 

Everything he has is given to him, either by the monarch or by the country and the people who work for him.

 

Oh, to be 'making my own income' that way.

 

I'm a Royalist, by the way.

OK, he's a Royal yes with all the privileges, but I don't think he abuses them and I also believe he does what he can. With all that has happened to him, I think he's very in touch with the modern world and with real people. He can't help who he is. I still support him!

Personally I think that given half a chance good old Charlie boy would have been down at Stonehenge on midsummers and would have taken Arthur Pendragons sword off of him and declared himself Chief Dragon of all Britain!

Mind you given his public statement that, should he become Monarch, he wishes to change his old Roman Catholic title of Defender of the Faith to Defender of the Faiths, maybe one day we will see him there.... :!:

What am I? :wink: now there's a deep question! (I have been called many things!)

 

in terms of church denomination I belong to the United Reformed Church which is a denomination born out of a desire to bring churches together - so it was born out of a union of the Congregagational church and the Presbyterian Church in 1972 - a new church but with cong. and presb. roots going back to the Reformation.

 

in 1980 we were joined by the Churches of Christ, and in 2000 by the Scottish Congregational Church - but now "Ooops, word censored!"ody else wants to unite with us - we've asked the Methodists and the Anglicans many times but they (politely) told us to "go away" (ed. by Sheila)

 

As to what distinguishes the URC...

 

1. has always had women Ministers with exactly the same status as men (going right back to the early 1900s in the congregational church)

 

2. dos not have a hierarchy of individuals (bishops/archbishops etc) - but instead operates as a conciliar church - the minister is not in charge, the chuch members decise all major issued through the Church Meeting (the idea is that a group of people is more likely to be able to discern God's will than a person on their own...) - it does lead to lots of meetings though! :(

 

3. is a "free" church - ie is not linked to the state in any way - like all the denominations except the Anglicans (AKA CofE)

 

4. embraces a wide variety of theological opinion - which has strengths and weaknesses. weakness: it's quite hard to officially pronounce "what does the URC believe about any particular issue" strength: people at many stages of faith can easily find place.

 

5. if there is a "flavour" - the URC leans towards a liberal view on most issues - we do knowingly ordain homosexuals for instance and we're not that bothered about sexuality (though there is a significant URC Conservative-evangelical wing which makes lots of noise) and we do marry pretty much anyone - divorce is not a problem! (here I am touting or business!!) and we were largely against the Iraq invasion

 

the URC is most famous amongst other denominations for its strong stance on "Church and Society" issues - fair trade, trade justice, racism, homophobia, (more recently) domestic violence

 

most famous URC member... err... might be John Cole - the old BBC political correspondent, though I'm sure there are others...

 

 

..turned out longer than I planned - but it's not easy simplt to say URC - when hardly anyone knows what that is!

...well, you're certainly not alone there! 'Liberation' is all very well and good, but the justification for the invasion was something completely different... and the motivation was probably completely different again!

 

But thats a story for another thread...

 

Personally, I approve of inclusive churches. Having had problems getting 3 of 5 christened as we were not 'regular' church goers (i.e. more than 3/4 times a year) I became very disillusioned with the church.

 

Instead of telling folks they 'must' or they 'can't', why not say, YES!!!

It just depends where you go Helen and who the priest is. Our vicar (CofE) would baptise anyone (I think they have to be children, normally only bishops can baptise adults). He would visit them in their home or take them for a drink in the pub. His approach is so welcoming that people end up coming to church anyway!

 

I don't mean to sound smug (!) but I think he is right. Meet people where they are and be friendly!

Our church is an open church - we offer baptism for anyone who asks - they make the promises, it is their responsibility to keep them.. I happen to believe that people "belong" before they "believe" - and offering a welcome whenever people pluck up the courage to come is a very good first step...

 

but I can't be quite as scathing as you over churches that ask for more.. I can se the other side of the argument too... I can't understand why anyone would want a baby baptised if they don't regularly go to church.. I wouldn't sign my children up for swimming lessons if I never intended to take them swimming... :roll:

 

there's plenty of stuff to bash churches about - and let me be at the front of the queue - but being choosy about baptism (though it's not my practice) is a perfectly logical position to hold...

 

(of course there are good and bad ways of explaining your position... When I lived in Hartlepool, couples who visited the vicar up the road from me rarely got past the housekeeper - she grilled them - and should it transpire that one of them had been divorced she would simply say - "no, try somewhere else" - and shut the door on them. Most of them ended up on my doorstep and consequently I did about 60-70 weddings a year which really stuffed up all my saturday afternoons for the entire summer period... :? - but I did get invited to loads of receptions - there's only so much wedding-food you can take in a year....)
