josephine77
Is it ok for chooks to get drenched? Mine are like drowned rats tonight - will they get too cold? They do have shelter, but still seem to stand out in the rain. I felt so guilty tonight I stood in the pouring rain in my wellies feeding them warm buttered toast Should I be drying them off before bedtime? They went to bet soaked and muddy tonight and the inside of the eglu is muddy too from where they've trampled the mud in and out all day....I feel really sorry for them? How are you all keeping your chooks dry? Or am I worrying too much? Thanks, Jo xxx
mostin
I am glad I am not the only one feeling guilty about my poor wet babies. They were drenched tonight, and yet had avoided the shelter through there own choice so I assume they must be ok with getting that wet. I just hope they get warm and dry propery in their eglu overnight.

The Brown Clan
I know what you mean its like a monsoon here my girls were drenched after slipping all over the run today hope they dry out overnight )
Egluntyne
It is like the Somme out in my garden. Even though the Eglus are covered with plastic sheeting and are up on slabs, the Aubiose is damp and puddles are lapping round the edges if the runs. I squelched across the garden at tea time to see if they were all ok, and they were, but everywhere looked a sorry sight. I fear there will be more of the same tomorrow. alexgirl73
Just been out to check on mines (again ) Four of them are all tucked up cosy in the coop, and the other eejit, is roosting outside on the tyre which is their dust bath!! The back end of her is getting slightly damp, but I tried to shoo her into the coop with no luck. And where she is is too far back for me to get her. Fingers crossed that she moves inside. Guest
I had to blow dry Bea yesterday as she was sodden to the skin and she can't shake herself dry like the other girls can. The others were soaked but can shake themselves and walk around. Bea has a cat box to shelter in but decided, for some strange reason, to sit under a leak in the roof and get drenched! josephine77
Thanks all, it's nice to know that we're all in the same boat! I have now abandoned my bark chipping run base (which had turned to a swamp and have moved the eglu onto the lawn, at least that way they're not wading through mud. The silly girls are still out there digging in the flowerbeds though, so all have black muddy beaks and faces too!! I have just fed them toast again which they seemed to appreciate
bokbokbok
I went out last night in all that rain to find Cake and Sydney totally soaked (the rest were ok). The thing is - there was one part of the run wet and the rest perfectly dry so they must have stood on purpose in the rain! All the rest were dry. Silly chooks. I reckoned if they were doing it to themselves I didn't need to feel guilty about it. This morning they were dry again and looking grand. mostin
I must be so lucky as in Leeds today we have had glorious sunshine all day. My girls have been stretched out sunbathing all day and having a grand old time. they have recovered from their soaking last night. I'm sure the rain will get to me later on though and my daft girls will stand out in it again and get drenched...again!

Jules.
We saw the sun today for a brief hour- the hens were sunbathing outside the back door & I took a photo but can't seem to load it up. Here's my girls about 3 months ago when we had a very heavy rainstorm- I brought them in to dry and put the heating on for them

iar fach goch
my poor little hens are absolutely soaked again today , has not stopped pouring down all day again and they are looking particularly miserable . OH has warned me not to bring them inside, after all they are only "farm animals"!!!!!!! I don't like sending them to bed wet, but what else can I do? I think I'll just go and make them some yummy hot layer pellet porridge!
Yolky
It is just awful here, hasn't stopped for days. My garden looks like a mud bath. The chooks were out today and it started to hammer down, one very clever chook immediately ran for cover, the other two just looked about as if they were wondering what that wet stuff was lol! Luckily my run has been mostly water tight, just a little bit where the water came in sideways.

RubyReckless
Leeds has had a rare sunny day which was nice for us, but that dreadful yorkshire clay means nearly the entire garden is under water by 2 to 5 inches, so the poor chooks are wading birds. yuck!
