Maccbean
Can't believe it, fireworks have been going off for the past 45 minutes. They are such cheapskates they are letting them off every 3-4 minutes to make them last longer. I'm so worried about my chickies, I've only had them two weeks. They'll never lay an egg at this rate:) Is there anything I can do for them?
Guest
Do you have an old blanket or peice of carpet you could put over the Eglu - that's what I use in the run-up to bonfire night. And make sure the Eglu door is shut.
Guest
well, last bonfire night it was like the blitz round here but the chickens didn't make a sound, they were fine. If they're tucked up in their coop/eglu they'll be fine. Have you put an ear to the eglu to see if you can hear them? I'll bet they're sound aslepp
Maccbean
The door is closed prompt after they go to bed (currently 7:50!). I went to check on them and there's not a peep out of them (they barely make a noise at the moment at any time), does that mean all is OK? I'd feel a lot better if it did. Anyway, as I say, they were cheapskates, and it's been quiet for 10 mins so hopefully that's the end of it. Bl**dy fireworks, should be banned! Janty
Don't worry. I was paranoid last year and became really worried every time the fireworks went off. As Poet said, the hens don't generally bother about them. Mine didn't make a noise. They were disturbed more by me when I kept opening up the cube to check that they were alright. Egluntyne
We used to have a lunatic neighbour who let massive fireworks off most weekends. I used to worry about the chickens and sprinted up the garden a few times to see if they were OK. They were always fast asleep. Soon be Bonfire night. Scooby
Maybe I'm a worrier, but I brought the girl in last bonfire night. They spent the night in pet carrier boxes on the kitchen floor And when we were away over new year I left strict instructions with my sister to lift the girls out of the cube and place them inside the house again. She wasn't impressed
Hen Watch
Is there anything I can do for them? They will be fine. Once they are laying, you may find some interesting eggs the next day though. We usually get the odd torpedo or golf ball shaped eggs if the girls hear fireworks or huge thunderstorms.
cliveb
Many thanks for this post and the informative replys. I was going to ask the same question,as bonfire night was worrying me , I was resigned to bringing the girls in, however it would seem that they will be fine out in thier Egloo. Hopefully the fireworks wont last too long anyway.
Emma Tarpey
Mine have no problem, they just go in and fall asleep
Janepie33
We have had a couple of bonfire nights with our girls and they have stayed outside in their Eglu and been absolutely fine. After a massive thunder storm the other night, we had a couple of normal eggs and one shaped like a huge Tac Tac with a normal egg inside! dancing cloud
I had a big firework display here at the end of the carnival in mid-August. As my girls had been upset by thunderstorms a couple of weeks before, I was really concerned (and posted here), but no need - they slept straight through it and all laid eggs as usual the next day
Geoid
Where I live fireworks are going 24/7 (Hindu festivals, weddings etc), My chooks have got used to it now, they just carry on as normal. I think they are pyrochooks....
Maccbean
I think I'm not going to worry to much now. It was a fairly windy day up here today, and whilst I was feeding the hens their daily mealy worm treats, our new canvas roof banged really loudly in the wind, so much so it scared the living daylights out of me, but the girls didn't even blink. As long as they are shut safely in their eglu once the fireworks start, I'm going to try to not to worry.
