When to use Poultry Shield

Recommended Posts

Sorry to ask a daft question but when should I use PS?

I had ordered some having read this forum. When I cleaned out the eglu a couple of days ago, I noticed some small insects pinhead sized, not red, duly distroyed. :o

Unsure if was red mite, girls all fit and well although only 2 eggs yesterday, rather than the 3 we have been used to lately.

When I read the excellent leaflet from Flyte so Fancy, it said to use it in the evening, is this essential if you dont have RSM as well as if you do.

I think if you are using it as a precaution rather than cure.. just use it anytime of day when you are cleaning.

That's what I do. When we give the eglu a good scrub out I use the poultry shield all over and spray a bit extra in all the gaps of the wooden bars.. so far so good, no RSM..

Just took delivery of plastic bars to help with the cleaning .. so going to be even easier now!

I use diluted poultry shield every full-on cleaning.

In terms of keeping red mite at bay, old-school Creosote, which is apparently illegal(?) now - or at least you can only buy it from very, very specialist places, not garden centres, is great at keeping the mites at bay if you have a wooden enclosure. And that's just an annual treatment of the wood - like a coat every summer of all your wood. Creosote won't work for eglus though.

A big jug of poultry shield will last you ages. It's a good image isn't it, 'poultry shield'? I imagine hens with shields and swords, like Asterix characters!

My, you do have a vivid imagination! Is Asterix still around or are you showing your age?!

I have a wooden ark and I give the coop a thorough soaking with Poultry Shield about every 2 to 3 weeks. I'm not sure if that is enough but so far it has kept the little red blighters away.

When I bought Poultry Shield from a place on the West coast of Scotland the very knowledgable lady told me that as well as using it to spray wooden hen houses against mite you could also spray chickens with it. She said the manufacturers were not allowed to advertise it as such as it would need to be treated as a veterinary product.

Has anybody heard of this before and does it work for lice and mite?

Gamebird, Asterix is alive, but only just:

As for poultry shield on chickens, I have read you can spray it around when chickens are present, so I presume it doesn't do them any real harm, but I'm not sure about direct spraying. It is drying.
