Martin B
I can't believe it! I have just put the chooks to bed and filled up the grub and glugs, as I was putting the mash into the grub a massive frog (possibly a toad) jumped out right into the feed tub! I screamed like a girl ( ) and fled for the house. When I returned the toad had thankfully gone! Quite embarrasing to think of it!

bracken
Aaaahhh Bless! Hope you didnt frighten the poor little critter I personally think they're lovely creatures. Found one yesterday in the dog run that we have built for the chooks when we move house. Spent most of the afternoon chasing it around the garden to get it into one of the ponds before it shrivelled up with the heat. The little so and so was too quick. So i watered near where it was to help it keep moist.
Martin B
I don't particuarly like slimy things, but I don't mind when the chooks have mea worms, they're cute!
AnnieP
Yep: We uncovered a toad yesterday when doing some gardening (finally). I guess they are all despirate in this heat to find somewhere cool and damp. I love them!
Cinnamon
The kitten caught a froggy/toady thing yesterday. I managed to get it back into the pond before any real damage was done ,but had to put my marigolds on before I touched it

Martin B
THEY'RE GANGING UP ON ME! I've never seen a frog in our garden since we moved in about 4 years ago! Now they're everywhere the pond does us no favours, and they just leap out at me and give me an unexpected fright! The worse thing is that I walk bare foot to the eglu to shut the chooks in then they pounce and turn on me! I'll be watching my footsteps from now on! ali-s
A few of us at work today rescued lots of tiny frogs. They were hopping across a grassy area to the woods. The groundsman was due to cut the grass on his sit and ride lawn mower We collected some containers from the kitchen (not ones used to serve the food) and picked up as many frogs as we could and let them go near the trees. Some of the girls put on latex gloves before handling them, others just walked about holding the bottoms of their trousers (as though the frogs were going to climb up their legs ) So a few frogs were saved and it made a very boring day bearable I was temped to bring a few home and let them go in the garden. If any have survived the mower blades I may do so tomorrow.
Martin B
Glad you managed to successfully help those "gangsters"
kannie
Do toads eat chicken food? I've dropped odd pellets on the shed floor when filling up the cannister, and was a bit worried that they might attract mice or rats. However I've noticed a whole lot of slimy trails recently, so the slugs or snails obviously got there first! I've found snails in the pellet peanut several times too! Can't imagine how they got there - must have climbed up the mesh of the run!
Martin B
Slugs and snails are determined to do anything, include eating the plants!
The Dogmother
Golly, you've made me laugh Martin - you big girl's blouse!! Thanks for that I love toads and frogs, I don't mind handling them but always wear gloves with toads as they have a slightly toxic slime on them that gives me a rash Our cats used to bring in newts from a neighbours pond - Rosie thought that they were dinosaurs
Martin B
That's sweet, I suppose they do look like mini dinosaurs!
The Dogmother
They are so beautiful and I am mortified that they catch them, but the neighbour is fine about it (luckily). I try to get them straight away and put them in water before taking them straight round to their pond.
Martin B
Sounds like you have pleasany neighbors. Mind you I knew they were nice because when I stayed they said hello, smiled and asked me how I was!
The Dogmother
Some of them are nice, but there's a grumpy old boy next door - most of the problem is because he's VERY DEAF and can't hear what people are saying Generally our street has a lovely community atmosphere We are planning a picnic in the park at the end of the road later in the summer. Martin B
Picnic in the park! We don't even know the names of our neighbours on one side. We have poor community spirit round here.
