piptiddlepip
Some of you might remember me posting a week or so ago about our youngest chook Aggie, our little lost soul with no comb. All her friends had grown their combs and wattles and were laying eggs like there was no tomorrow, but poor little Aggie was the odd one out with a tiny pink ridge on her head. Well, over the last week we'd noticed her comb was beginning to grow and go a darker red. And then she started to crouch - a half-hearted Cherie Blair "curtsey" at first, then proper crouching and stamping (I'm sure Maggie taught her to do this - when Maggie stamps it's like an earthquake). Over the weekend I had taken our cat's winter kennel to bits, weatherproofed it, put it back together and lined it with freshly washed cat rugs, as we don't have a catflap - so when we're at work, Malachy and Violet curl up together all snug inside until we arrive home with the Whiskas and let them in. This morning I went out to pop the chooks back into their run and give them their usual corn on the cob. Maggie, Esme and Gytha came running, but there was no sign of Aggie! Getting increasingly frantic, I checked next-door's garden, the building site next door, round the back of the compost bin, and under every tarp, nook and cranny I could think of...and then my eye fell on the cat kennel. I lifted up the top - and lo and behold, there was Aggie just getting off a warm, freshly-laid eggie! I made a huge fuss of her and told her what a clever little chookie she was to find somewhere warm, safe and private to lay her first egg. Now I just hope if she's determined to lay all her eggs in there that Malachy and Violet don't mind a time-share!

piptiddlepip
Caught her in there again this morning, but she wasn't laying this time, just relaxing. I'm sure she thinks it's a new luxury chook pad I've built, especially for her!
