kimmi_b
My best girl Zellie has passed away :'( Some of you may remember she was eggbound a couple of months ago and although the vet advised we have her put down at that point, I asked for her to be given anti-biotics instead. She perked up within 2 days and spent several weeks being treated like a queen by myself and my partner Anyway, we had been away in France for a week and returned on Saturday. Some friends had been looking after the house and animals for us and said she was absolutely fine, yet on Sunday she was very lethargic with a blue comb, not really moving much and keeping her eyes shut. I called the vets as I suspected the eggbound problem had reoccurred and she wasn't going to improve this time. They wanted £70 callout fee to come to the house plus charge for putting her to sleep but I just couldn't afford it She wasn't showing signs of pain, happy to let me stroke her just unable to interact with me. I wrapped her in a towel for warmth and popped her into a box for shelter. She passed away late Sunday evening. I want to think she went peacefully and happy but I keep feeling angry at myself for not having that money for the vet and am feeling like a very bad chicken owner now

Sheilaz
Showing her such love & compassion in her last few hours is what any hen would wish for, the vet could have done nothing better. She had a happy life, a pampered 2nd chance, and a dignified & peaceful end. You're a great chicken owner, intervention wouldn't have helped, and she slipped away naturally. R.I.P.Zelda. Sandychick
I want to think she went peacefully and happy but I keep feeling angry at myself for not having that money for the vet and am feeling like a very bad chicken owner now Sorry to hear about Zellie I would have done exactly the same. There are limits, and as this seemed a reoccuring problem she probably would have suffered long term. I think you made the right decision and she was warm and snuggly and loved which is the important bit.
Egluntyne
Sorry to hear about Zelda. Don't torture yourself over the vet issue. She died at home surrounded by love. What better way to go.
redfrock
sorry to hear about Zelda. I truly sympathise with you at this difficult time. It would appear that there is a sudden spate of us who are experiencing these losses. You did all you could for her - remember that x

Ain't Nobody Here
So sorry to hear about Zellie . You did all you could, and the chances are it would have recurred even if you had taken her to the vets. Don't blame yourself.

Mel (& Paul)
How pants for you But you MUST NOT feel bad - she died quietly and peacefully surrounded by things she knew - she would not have been stressed - it sounds like she had heart problems and she probably slipped away quietly. You are NOT a bad chicken mum for not being able to afford such a huge vet bill. Big hugs
