beach chick
my girls finished up last nights' shepherds pie this morning: lamb mince, onions, courgettes, grated carrot, stock, herbs, black pepper, topped with buttery potato and parsnip mash - they loved it!! was slightly dubious about giving them the meat - this was the first time I've done it - but I'm sure I've read that the extra protein is ok. we also give them leftover cold pasta, rice, veg, fruit, roasties, etc. what other leftovers do you all give? Egluntyne
Mine gobble anything like that in a trice, and as you say, it is a good protein boost. Strictly speaking, according to DEFRA regs, they shouldn't eat meat, or anything that has been prepared in the kitchen, but in practice, those of us with a few back garden hens probably all do it.....it seems a pity to bin it if it isn't going to be eaten by the humans in the household.. beach chick
the meat thing I can kind of understand (tho it doesnt make sense when you think they eat bugs, slugs, even frogs and mice) but ANYTHING prepared in a kitchen? lawd help me, that's ridiculous! I shall continue, even if the jackboots from DEFRA descend on me all guns blazing!!

helenmb
Just watch the salt content in anything you give them as this can cause problems.

dancing cloud
Having seen my lovely Daisy-hen scoff mice caught by my cat I'm sure a few leftovers won't hurt (though in my house the cats expect first refusal )
fowlbird
Having seen my lovely Daisy-hen scoff mice caught by my cat our girls have been known to attack frogs, mice and baby rats they won't touch the larger slugs though we give them leftover rice (OH cooks extra for them) roasties, pasta, corn on the cob etc
jomaxsmith
I don't give mine too many leftovers as I want them to fill up on mash but they do have leftover rice, jacket potato skins, yorkshire puddings etc. Jo
RubyReckless
Mine do love the crusts the kids leave from their butties or toast. Peanut butter has been a big hit. They also get all our apple cores and have a good fight over them. We don't give them meat products, though. I take that one more seriously. Have you seen chooks gobbling woodlice? Ours go like machine guns, gobbling them up. Popcorn for hens!
