ruth1
Piptiddlepip wrote Me and other half are both huge Terry Pratchett fans, particularly of books featuring the witches - Esmeralda Weatherwax, Gytha Ogg, Magrat Garlick and later, Agnes Nitt. Ditto for some of my girls when collecting my first two girls I saw the adult Orpingtons running across the field with their big fluffy knickers and my mental picture of Gytha Ogg was realised so our little Buff Orp became Gytha. Ella collected on the same day because as my husband said she's a salmon ella Faverolle Esme was collected the next day and suited the name right away - her and Gytha really do rule the roost ! The two legbars were going to be Agnes and Magrat but their personalities didnt suit.So they were named after book characters Lemon because of lemon Maran pie ( can you guess that was hubby to) And Audrey and Marjorie because I 've started watching to the Manor Born on sky [

Seagazer
My children named this lot of chickens but if we have any more then I will name them. I like the names Doris, Delilah etc all the old fashioned type of names.
Barkisland
Mary Alice & Ada are named after my two late Grandmamas, Molly after an elderly spinster aunt, also sadly now deceased, and Gilda (my auburn stunner) after Rita Hayworth's lead role in the 1946 film of the same name. They all suit their names and bear some resemblance, in both character and appearance, to their namesakes!
bigmommasally
Mine are named after my nan's too ! (Alice & Mary) - and 3 great Aunts (Maude, Gwen & Doris) I'm planning to name all future hens after female relatives, I think a few of them are secretly hoping their name will be chosen next
Dinkychick
Pecky GG was named by my DD... Pecky because he was and the GG bit was what she used to call her Great Gran RIP Strut is named so because when we got her at 8 weeks she was so covered in mud that she walked funny! Alfred is after a chicken in a computer game one of my friends designed. Alfred was meant to be a hen! But she maybe a he lol. Bunny is because she has a delicate pale face and white ears, she would of been Alfred if we had got her first. Smeegal is a name my DD picked after her daddy rattled off a few random things. iar fach goch
My MS named ours as they were his birthday present, they were studying dinosaurs at school at the time and he was dinosaur mad; he also wanted to name one after his best friend. If we ever have any more I get to choose the names and I'm going for good old fashioned names!
RubyReckless
DP always picks things like Korma, Tikka, Roast, Kentucky Fried etc etc. A person of taste and discernment. : He's the only one of the 5 of us who eats chicken, so we don't like to encourage him too much... Chickvic
We just looked for a theme - precious stones - and stuck with it. My DH decided to call our pepperpot Pearl (as in the Black Pearl - Pirates of the Carribean) My DD wanted Opal as it's her birthstone and DS wanted Ruby (Kaiser Chiefs ) I didn't get to pick but it's a theme we will continue when we get more chickens

Tulip
OH and I absolutely love chillis and can't eat enough of them. So that was number one girl and the rest followed from there. The buff orp had to be cinnamon because of her colour.....
Willow_Warren
I watched the film Miss Potter at about the same time I was thinking about getting chickens, and decided that Beatrix was a good name for a chicken. I wanted my chickens to have "proper" and "posh" names so picked other names for the same era (bit of a google exercise). So mine are called: Arabella (bluebell) Clara (speckled) Winifred (black star) - also my dad was trying to be funny saying he wanted to call his chicken "Fred" - and Winifred fitted in well with my scheme. As you can see I don't have my original thought for a name Beatrix - this is because in my mind Beatrix was goign to be a white chicken and they were "out of stock" when we went. dancing cloud
I made the mistake of involving my niece and twin nephews (11 and 10 respectively) in picking names for my ex-batts, who came up with:- Chance - we're lucky hens who have been given a second chance Joy - we're jumping for joy because we've got a second chance Hope - we were always hoping for something better and now we've got it Dandelion - because my niece liked it Daisy and Clover - because along with dandelions that's pretty much what my lawn's made up of (and I collected 2 more than expected, so had to come up with names fast) I'd tried to get them to think about all the things ex-batts wouldn't have seen before, expecting names like sun, moon, sky, cloud etc, but this was what they chose. As Chance, Joy and Dandelion are "their" hens, I had to go along with it . Good job they didn't get to know their characters first or they'd probably have ended up as Trouble, Mischief, Nosey, Noisy, Bossy and Cheeky-beak (Hmm - names for the next batch right there )

mostin
Two of mine were already named when I adopted them. They were named Lillian and Priscilla after the previous owners grandmothers and we have kept those names out of respect. When the two new girls turned up I didn't have a clue, but after watching the amber link for half and hour it was obvious. She kept puffing up her chest and shaking her head as if she was shaking a load of blonde hair, so she was immediately Dolly, after Dolly Parton. The Black Rock we got at the same time was quite a vocal girl so we kept to the singers theme and she became Shirley, after Shirley Bassey.
