first eggs - hoorah!

Recommended Posts

Following first posting (with newbie worries about bullying and yellow poo!) Tilly GNR and Siggy PP have settled down and are now best of friends and to top everything we had our first 2 !eggbrown! today (22 wks minus 2 days!) - they are perfect in everyway! Just got to decide whether to fry, boil or scramble now!

Lucky you  Two of my new girls have layed today but only 1 egg is useable (and that is a torpedo one) as the other was a softie. Hopefully they will settle down in a few days :anxious: No treats I think to make sure they get all the required nutrient!

Hope they taste lovely :D

Hi

I am a newbie to the forum so if this is the wrong place to post please excuse

My girls are 6 months old and still not laying - I have read here not to feed treats? They are pretty spoilt - so should I lay off treats until they lay and hope some eggs may come? I have three bantams - Many thanks any advice.

I know it's difficult, but feed no treats at all, only their layers pellets for a few weeks. They will sulk for a couple of days and may even ignore the pellets, but they will eat them when they are hungry enough. That should kick start them into laying. If even that doesn't work after a couple of weeks then they may need worming. Good luck, and don't them them guilt you into giving them treats!

Welcome to the forum, Buffiebantam :D .

Are your girls crouching at all? And how do their combs and wattles look?

Two of my girls were 28 weeks old and and one was 40 weeks (after laying 10 tiny eggs at 21 wks then stopping for months  ) before they started laying.

You'll just have to be patient (but limiting treats is good advice in the meantime!)

Great thanks for both of your advice. :D It is so hard not to give them treats as yes they are ignoring their pellets as they know I have better food. Their combs are red and bright, so I know that is good news, not sure about crouching. They did prefer the layers pellets to the growers so I will change back to layers. I don't mind having no eggs as just watching them gives all alot of joy - eggs just would be a bonus.

Thanks for your advice - I have got worming liquid, will give that a go as well.

You are doing are really well, and just be patient, sometimes they just take a while to get started.

I know it's really difficult to not give them treats, "Ooops, word censored!"ody can stare at you like a chicken can  , not even my mother in law  . They are really good at pretending to be hard done by aren't they?

You'll fit in here quite nicely if you're soppy enough to put your eggs on a cushion :lol::lol: .

Make sure you take photos of them, weigh them and write the date and name of layee on them :D . I'm not joking, BTW, it's mandatory!

Thanks for the tip re. writing the date - we've now had 9 !eggbrown!s (Siggy PP takes Friday as a rest day) - it is very useful to know which are the oldest when using them!. Also for tip re. weighing - from first to last have increased from 32g to 52g. Some of the eggs are speckled and others not - I thought they would all be the same?

Still no eggs from Tilly GNR - but her comb is very pale, I think she may be quite a bit younger?

The !eggbrown!!eggspeck! were on a cushion to have their photos taken  !

My Pepperpot's eggs have always been quite a dark brown and have never gone over about 60g and are a good egg shape. Flo my first Gingernut's eggs are much lighter and pinky brown and quite roundish and they are usually 68g +. I thought I'd have trouble distinguishing between the other Gingernut's but her eggs are slightly darker than the other ones and more pointed! They are starting to get to the same size as the other gingernut.

Different coloured egg layers would be so much easier though
