BeckyBoo
Flew with my 14 month old to Australia, two flights, 10 and 12 hours, then back with 22 month old and 6 weeks old - 3 flights 6 7 and 8 hours, and flown with 2 4 and 6 year old to Portugal although that was only 2 hours. The good thing is they sleep most of the way due to the humming of the engine so if it's under a 12 hour flight we always try for the night flight or at least evening if possible. The kids just go to sleep - bliss! Have plenty of colouring in if they're old enough and sweets or a drink for them on landing as their ears pop and it can hurt if they don't swallow. The long haul flights were actually easier as the staff were SO helpful, I'd do it again at the drop of a hat, although it's not at the top of my list of things I want to do! Christian
if it's a long flight, book months ahead to make sure you get the bulk head row with a bassinet. Travel light. It amazes me the amount of parents that get on board with 5+ bags EACH. Pack what you need for the flight, plus a little extra in case of delays. Buy a cheap small foldaway buggy - most airlines will allow you to take it onboard with you if it is small. Some people try to get on with off road 4x4 buggies - no way. They won't fit in the lockers or the wardrobe. If the baby is very young, try and time a feed when you are descending. That is when their ears start to hurt and suckling helps clear them. If all else fails, lots of calpol Good luck

I don't know if they still do the drug, was it called Fenugen?? Worked like a dream but I probably shouldn't admit that!
bronze
Ok I'm planning to go and see my parents when little one is 4-8 weeks old so will be flying to Pris tina. Koso va. I think its only about 3 hours or so. Don't worry Christian I plan to travel light. Large rucksack for the hold and small bag for hand luggage. Its just me and baby so I'll have to carry it all. I don't plan to take a pushchair and will just use a sling but I was wondering what the deal is with c"Ooops, word censored!"ats as I would like to take one. Ooh we have an older one used for ds1 thats smaller. I could take that and even leave it there. Does a c"Ooops, word censored!"at count as another bit of luggage and would I get charged extra for it? I havent flown for 6 years and that was pre children. Will definitely do the feeding thing, baby will be too young for calpol and I won't have to worry about the liquids thing. I'm still in shock that they want to charge me 60 quid for someone who wont have a seat, wont eat or drink anything and wont require any additional help from them. I still need to tell my parents I'll have an attachment

Christian
Sorry, I didn't mean for it to sound like I was having a go, just trying to be helpful. I love having babies on my flights and always insist that the parents come into the galley for a cuddle (the baby that is, I don't cuddle the parent as a rule)! Bronze, speak to the airline about car seats. It depends on the airline. We allow car seats if the baby is 0-18 months old and a seat is booked. They do bring the car seats on and can use it if the flight is empty and spare seats are available, without booking. Not worth the risk on a full flight though. If you want to book a spare seat for the car seat, it is discounted (but not by much). Pm me of you need more details.
bronze
I'm looking at BA (is that you?) I think theyre the only ones whi fly there. I dont want the c"Ooops, word censored!"at on the journey just need it at the other end. I am so going to have to look at luggage quotas and stuff as I have no idea. Paola
I'm still in shock that they want to charge me 60 quid for someone who wont have a seat, wont eat or drink anything and wont require any additional help from them. I annoyed me also I flew to Italy when DD2 was about 3 months old. I just fed her on take off and landing and she slept the rest of the time I had a quinny zap, which is a frame (I had taken the pushchair seat off) that the car seat attached to. So we took the car seat on board without any problems and no extra charge
jlo
Christian - you didn't sound as though you were having a go at all. For all the glamour of travelling the world, I don't envy your job at all. I have seen cabin crew deal brilliantly with difficult situations so calmly when I would just want to give someone a cuff round the ear! Bronze, I am sure that you will be ultra mum! Good luck! I think the flight is from Gatwick as I have never been there (Heathrow based). You can check the car seat into hold as normal luggage and not pay extra (up to 23KG allowance in economy). The aircraft will probably be a 737 so no bulk head seat, but fine. 130 or so seater. If you join the executive club, you can check in on line 24 hours before hand and reserve a seat

Shirl
Travelling with a yound baby is easy, it's when they hit 18 months and want to be on their feet all the time that the fun starts! We took DD2 when she was just 3 months old and as I breastfeed it was so easy. A quick feed on take off and she went to sleep and then another on landing. Most breastfed babies of that age will feed whenever offered so if you are planning on breastfeeding then you'll have it easy You'll just need a few nappies for the flight and waiting at the airport and a change of clothes for baby and a spare top for you (incase you get puked down!) it wouldn't be nice to turn up smelling of sick. Have fun.
Plum
I've recently been to Barbados with BA and we booked the bulkhead seat (no baby). A baby was on the other side of the plane and they had a drop down shelf for the baby carrier. Very cute little baby. After a feed it slept all the way. The staff were very good. Barbados is so beautiful and they have interesting chickens and cockerals Edited to add -dont know where I got Barbados from must clean my glasses before reading threads ! bronze
Well I emailed my parents and told them I would be bringing an extra. My Dads reply 'We have a cot but no mattress' It was easier than its going to be telling the inlaws.
cam1
Hi we have only flown when my two have been 18 months. both flights were long haul 8 ish hrs. The airline we last flew with allowed us to put pushchair and travel cot in the hold in addition to our luggage allowance and would have let us put a car seat in the hold as well if we had needed i would contact your airline and ask. I would defo pack a spare top! a muslin or terry sqaure in case of sick is handy as well! cam mya velma
