Hi guys.....

 

Looked in on my girlies before closing the door, to find all of them in a heap sleeping

 

But they were huddled in a tiny corner, not enjoying their palace at all!

 

Do they do it for warmth? Do you think they are freezing in there? Is there anything I should do to help them?

Hi my girls cuddle together every night I think it is just a girl thing to do

They don't get cold in our climate...even in a normal winter.

 

My girls all huddle up together too. I think it is a hen thing.

Mine sleep in a heap even on the hottest night. I think it's just what chickens do.

Try sticking your hand in between 2 sleeping chooks. It's toasty warm!

Mine also sleep in a heap. If I lay my head in their coop they all jump in to my hood and cuddle me too...oh my, it's soooo warm!! I have been tempted (on a cold night) to bring them in to bed with us. Selfish reasons of course!!

Mine often sleep in a heap - I feel sorry for the one on the bottom. But other times they sleep all spread out - the weather/temperature doesn't seem to make any difference.

Hi,

Very new to the whole chicken thing,but loving it.Only had 2 for 6 wks now. Felt worried about the cold tonight here in West Scotland. Will they be warm enough?Mine were huddled together in a wee corner.

They will be fine Jerry. They have a much higher body temperature than us and feathers to keep them warm. Just make sure their house isn't drafty and they will be ok

when it gets really cold I make them up a warm mash of weetabix, a cheapy muesli mix and raisins in the mornings as a treat. My wife thinks it's hilarious but they loved it in last year's snow...

Hmmmmmmmmm I've started giving them mash in the late afternoons so they have something warm in their tummies before bed

 

The morning thing would be tricky as when I went to work this morning only 1 of them got up!!!

Ours have warm mash before bedtime to fill their bellies and then they sleep all cuddled up together in a heap. So I'm not too worried (though I do live in sunny Brighton where the winters are not quite so severe usually).

I put a thermometer in my eglu last year that sends a radio signal back to my weather station I have in the house and its suprising how much warmer it was inside the Eglu than outside (even when it was below zero outside). Will do the same this year when my Cube arrives next week.

I think the snuggling is a 'flock' thing, even my (sadly RIP now) grumpy older girl snuggled up to the youngsters at night even though she didn't care for them much when she was outside.
