Mrs Webmuppet
I noticed a sign in the butchers on the way to work selling half price free range frozen turkeys.........so we are off to get one tommorrow ( they are shut on Wednesday) I have measured the freezer shelves to get the max size I can get in there. I caused some hilarity in T***cos when I whipped out my tape measure and started measuring turkeys to get an idea of size........I have the most pathetic fridge freezer going but it came with the house so I didn't get a choice. I should just about squeeze a 7 kilo turkey in!
Cooks
well, I don't know about food, that part I still need to think about but this thread certainly made me realise how close Christmas is and I went out today and parted with a small fortune... I would cry but it's the season to be merry
..lay a little egg for me
I noticed a sign in the butchers on the way to work selling half price free range frozen turkeys.........so we are off to get one tommorrow ( they are shut on Wednesday) I have measured the freezer shelves to get the max size I can get in there. I should just about squeeze a 7 kilo turkey in! If it doesn't fit in one piece, try cutting off the legs. Jamie Oliver suggests roasting the legs separately anyway (on a higher shelf as they take more cooking than the breast), so that would work out well. I once ended up with a much bigger turkey than I had ordered and so cut off the legs, froze them and used them after Xmas.
Egluntyne
If you are catering for a large number of people at Christmas, you might be better off with two smaller turkeys...then there are four legs to argue over instead of just the two. Mrs Webmuppet
Sadly there won't be an option of putting the legs on a higher shelf as the oven is also a bit on the small size...........I am sure that they put smaller than average appliances in my kitchen in an attempt to jam it all in! Valkyrie
Mum ordered a turkey breast from our organic lady - it was still enough to feed 6 of us and more left to freeze - but it did fit in her little cooker. Although it was expensive because it was boneless, she felt she had more than enough. Then again, you can't make the soup without the bones! I usually order 12/15 pounder. It's huge! I now have a big range style cooker, so if I run out of room I can start up another oven. My main problem was lack of enough gas rings on the top, but you are right Mrs Webmuppet - cookers do seem to have shrunk. I found that problem when I wanted a new one and they seemed smaller internally than the one I already had. I needed a big one for all the roasts for the increasing number of mouths to feed at Christmas, so I made do with the old one until the kitchen was renovated. Now my new one is pretty ancient! Mrs Webmuppet
Our frozen free range turkey is now sitting in the freezer ( it was a bit of a tight squeeze getting it in) the nice man even turned into a crown for me......the legs are also safely stashed in the freezer. We don't have a real christmas tree, Mr Webmuppet bought a black tree with silver decorations the other year.
