Old Speckled Hen
Does anybody know York? DH and I are going for a belated 1st anniversary treat this weekend. Wonderful to leave the Mountain Rescue pager behind after this last one!!!! I've never been, I have some tourist info but it's always nicer to get that personal touch from somebody who knows the place. DH is a real ale fan so a nice pub along those lines is a must. Egluntyne
I love York. Him Indoors hails from there. The Minster and the Railway Museum are both worth a visit. There is a Betty's Tea Rooms too! Treat yourself to lunch there.
Guest
I'm off to York on Thursday! We enjoyed a boat trip one summer, but not sure how that would be this week! The Shambles is/are lovely, there is a good market and loads of shops. Outside York there are lots of NT/English Heritage sites too. I think it's probably safe to wander around and visit whatever takes your fancy as you see it.
Olly
wow - this is weird ... I'M going to York this weekend! What are the odds on that! I've been before so I'm quite relaxed about where I go/what I do, I want to go to Evensong at the Minster but as I'm going with five girlfriends we'll probably split up into twos or threes anyway. York Castle Museum is brilliant - it's got these shops set out exactly as they used to be with all the contents. Haven't been for ages, mind you, but I am sure it's still the same. The Railway Museum is good if you're into trains! I'm really planning on just doing a bit of strolling, shopping and eating and drinking, there's a big pedestrianised area with lots of interesting shops. The first time I went to York I'm pretty sure I did an open-top bus tour, I don't know if they still exist but they're a good way to see around. You can walk around quite a lot of the walls, and that's nice to get a view of the city. I'm sure someone else will be along soon who really knows the city, I'd love a recommendation for any good pubs!

Jillus
The Bluebelle Pub in Fossgate claims to be the smallest in York, good ale and very friendly

Olly
oo thanks everyone, specially Ginette for that - I love choral singing, and I'm going with friends from my choir so I'll try and make one of those. I am so excited it's ridiculous - I haven't had a holiday this year, so a weekend away feels like a real treat! It will just be fun being with my friends, we're taking Buck's Fizz to drink on the train as it's too early for the bar, we are sure to have a good time. Guest
Have a great time Olly! I don't plan to go to the Minster as I've only really got Friday as a full day and I'm staying with friends, but if we are at the same service I'm sure we'll spot each other! You'll be the crowd really singing and I'll be with my friend really singing!

chelsea
havent been to York but just thought I'd recommend http://www.tripadvisor.com good site with hotel recommendations and real reviews. Also a "York" forum where you can ask questions about pubs/restuarants etc. Have a lovely time,.
Snowy
York is fantastic for a weekend break! Many years since I've been able to browse round - seem to remember the Minster being worth a visit, and the cobbled shopping areas (the Shambles I think). When we went last year it was mainly for the boys to visit the railway museum - but I loved it as well! There are the Royal Coaches - amazing to see how much luxury can be crammed into a rail coach! And awe inspiring to stand by Mallard and be totally dwarfed by just one wheel! The museum is free entry, but once in you can go on the York equivalent of the London Eye if you pay extra. Fabulous views!
Tigerlily
I love York! It has everything - Museums, The Minster, shopping, eating, drinking... all within easy walking distance! You must go in Betty's and have a fat rascal but you might queue as it gets busy! There are river trips (depends on the weather), bus tours (hop on/off, I think), ghost walks. My favourite pubs (and Mr TL's) are: The Bluebelle, The Golden Fleece (nice food and one of the oldest pubs - Most Haunted have filmed there too), The Yorkshire Terrier and the Maltings (near the train station). There are loads of real ale pubs so you'll be spoilt for choice! Have a fantastic time, you've made me jealous now BW x TL

Bassett
I went about 10 years ago and loved it. I remember doing an audio tour which was really good and pointed out lots of interesting places.
Cate in NZ
Ooooh how lovely. I hope you have a great time . I've only been to York once so don't know it well enough to recommend anywhere, but we loved our visit there and ended up wishing we'd had longer to spend in the city. Oddly we were viewing a house on Sunday (been doing a lot of house-hunting recently ) and throughout the property were all these lovely pictures of Yorkshire, culminating in a row of framed black & white sketches of York scenes in the study. The real estate guy seemed surprised when we said that the vendors must be English.....couldn't work out how we'd picked up on that . Apparently they're homesick for Yorkshire and planning on returning.

We live in York: a real ale fan should go to the Maltings on Lendal Bridge; Three Legged Mare on Petergate or the Last Drop Inn - all fantastic and highly rated by the OH Climb to the top of the Minster and walk round, on a clear day, the view is astonishing! Definitely walk the bar walls - they are a real treat and we do it all the time! I recommend the Castle Museum and Clifford's tower next door. I agree about the Treasurer's House too. there is a redundant church on Goodramgate - Holy Trinity - that is amazing to look around and makes a fab spot for a picnic lunch from the Hot Roast sandwich shop nearby (next to the Mucky Duck). Enjoy! (you could always visit my chickens too, the best tourist attraction in York!)
jlo
I can't recommend any pubs as I haven't been to York for many years. It is a lovely place though and I am sure that you will have a great time. One of my teenage memories is being part of a big choir singing Faure's Requiem in the Minster and that was quite special. Enjoy!

My friend took me to a redundant church in York, but it doesn't sound like the same one. I can't tell you where it is or what it was called, but I really liked it. It has a great café with real cakes, soups, light lunches and drinks (with marshmallows on the top). It has a play area for children and a large Fair Trade shop. There is also a sign saying you can go upstairs for quiet reflection or counselling if you wish. It was really lovely. I'm staying in Acomb, Laurmurf

I'm staying in Acomb, Laurmurf HI Ginette, The one you went to is the Spurriergate Centre on Coney Street - it is a treasure, isn't it? I especially loved going there with small children because there was always someone to help with buggies, trays, child friendly food. There's actually a book called 'child friendly York' and it features hugely in there. Holy Trinity is through a small gateway and down an alley on Goodramgate (near a fab rubber stamp shop). It has old box pews, and often holds recitals of various sorts. In the spring you can sit in the churchyard surrounded by daffodils and eat a picnic in peace while Saturday hoards walk past. I can recommend the ghost walks too - they are truly spooky!
Olly
hhhh .... a RUBBER STAMP SHOP! I'm not going to be able to sleep tonight ... I love shops like that. I can feel some serious Christmas shopping coming on! Thanks for all the suggestions.
MedusA
As a child, I used to live in Church Fenton, mid way between Leeds and York. York was always my favourite. I loved walking along the walls and visiting the little cobbled street areas. The Rose window at the Minster is fabulous too. My brothers used to love the Railway Museum. I got the chance to go to a nursing conference in York a few years back, so got a taster, but there wasn't really time to do a proper walk down memory lane. Have a great time. I am so . Olly
Well, Ginette and DA - did you have a good time in York? I got back this afternoon, we've had a wonderful weekend - had a drink or two at the Maltings pub, thanks for the tip laurmurf, we had an absolutely wonderful meal at The Blue Bicycle and another at El Piano. Went to Evensong at the Minster on Friday night, walked all the way round the walls, did lots of shopping, eating and drinking ... it's been lovely. I hope you all enjoyed your weekends too. Wasn't the weather good? DH and I were at Evensong as well! Weren't the little girls soooo sweet We were sitting right infront of the chap who sings and the choir responds to. No idea what you call him. I'm a Catholic and we don't do Evensong. Ahhh just realised we went on Saturday. We had a pub dinner at The Old White Swan and a meal at Nineteen, both good. Lots of walking and real ale. Picked up lots of stocking fillers at Shared Earth. Lovely shop, looked at the Terramundis but they were £20!! Stopped at Antiques warehouse in Lancaster and picked something up for the bathroom. Home to yet another glorious day; chooks had been shut in their run and they were glad of a few hours in the garden. Next trip, Glasgow (my Alma Mater and not been back since) for the Christmas fair at the end of the month. Glad, Olly, that you had a good time too.
