stoice
So far as I know, no mice are living in my shed. My girls are a great mice deterrent as they live in half of my shed. I have all my feed in bins anyway so for now, so far so good. I have, however, noticed mice in my compost bin and lately my garage. I can get into my garage from my house so am obviously aware that the little darlings could easily venture into the house so something must be done. Well, got 4 mouse traps at the weekend for £1 and loaded them up with peanut butter. as soon as darkness falls we check on the traps. The two on the floor had caught a mouse each. Not a pretty sight really but at least it was quick. *Desperately tries not to feel too guilty for taking a life* Got OH to scoop up and put in bag (trap and all) then into bin. The other two traps on our work top so far has no sign but we know they go there as we often see their little 'presents' left behind. I've heard that if we have mice then at least we don't have rats. (As rats would see off mice) Has anyone else noticed the cold weather has 'produced' more of our furry friends? Going to buy more traps tonight... cordelia
I'm afraid the only mice we see are mangled, and often just legs and a tail, left by our super mouser Pudding on the front doormat....quite a sight to behold !!!! Occasionally in the summer, I could rescue them, and let them go again...particulalry cute little voles.. (we are surrounded by fields...so there is no point in catching them...until of course they go for my chicken food store !!) I'm sure they must be coming in for food... Alfred
I had left some rucksacks and holdall type bags open on my bedroom floor for a week or so. There was a mars bar (unopened) in 2 of them and an alpen bar in another. When I came to pack the bags for a trip i found them full of shredded wrapper. The alpen bar was completely eaten but the mars bars had lots of teeth marks in - the caramel must have been a struggle for them! I think they like that room as it is by the boiler. I went to look at mousetraps but felt too squeamish so just hoped the mice would go away - so far they have not been back!
piptiddlepip
Mice go past our garden at a run. If Malachy doesn't catch them and decapitate them, Violet will come and disapprove of them - a fate worse than death.
dancing cloud
There were a few mice recently, but I think word has now spread ... Loki the cat catches them , Daisy the hen eats them Not seen any in the last few days ...
Olly
I think at this time of year, mice are looking for a cosy warm billet for the winter. You could try turning the heating off! Welly went out of the cat-flap on Sunday night and returned within about 30 seconds, I swear, with a huge fat mouse, which he politely left on the hall rug for me. I was just glad he'd dispatched it, it's far worse when he brings them in and lets them go.
chickenanne
Nope, I can definitely say turning the heating off makes no difference to the mouse population.... we've none anyway (except a woodburner) and we've still got mice. It's the time of year; they always look for somewhere nice for the winter about now, particularly after their post-harvest eviction from nearby fields etc. Best thing is to get rid of them from the house /garage before they do any damage, and keep the anti-mouse measures in place all year. Barkisland
We have lots of lovely little field mice here, and at this time of year they start moving indoors to keep warm. We've had them in the garage and also in the loft - they get up through the cavity walls. Unfortunately, when they get up there they can't find anything to eat and can't find their way out again. I heard one scratching about last night. I'm sorry to say we've never had any success with humane traps, so OH has 'the deed' to do this weekend It always makes me sad, they are beautiful little creatures. HENthusiastic
After a recent findings of mouse 'presents' (mainly in the oven ) M.I.L. has given us a mouse deterrent. It plugs into a socket an gives off a sound that they dont like. we cant hear anything. So far so good, but its only been a few days. I will keep you posted. Seems like the perfect solution. I dont have mice and the mice dont have to die!
Paola
but the mars bars had lots of teeth marks in - the caramel must have been a struggle for them! I know I should not laugh Could not help myself at the thought of a mouse struggling with the caramel Not sure if I would like them in my bedroom

So far so good, but its only been a few days I think they only work once all the mice are gone. Then it deters any new comers. All the 'little presents' I found o the worktop are right in front of a plug socket with one of those plugged in. I also have a battery operated one on the floor. My mice must be hard core because they take no notice!
chickenanne
I hate them! They are very cute and am not phobic, love them outside, but they chewed the nose off my favourite dolly when I was very little, and since then.... bring out the nasty poison. SnowWhite
I hate them! They are very cute and am not phobic, love them outside, but they chewed the nose off my favourite dolly when I was very little, and since then.... bring out the nasty poison. Here here! I totally agree with poisoning them, and I'm probably one of the biggest and most passionate animal lovers around. It's surprising how many people will give you a strange look when you say that you want to poison mice and rats! They're vermin guys!! Cuckoos Nest
I'm with Snow White on this one. Anticoagulants are the best way to go. Not wanting to upset anyone, but there still is no firm scientific evidence that these "ultrasonic" devices actually work. In the USA many firms are being prosecuted for making claims about there repellers that can not be proven. Beleive me, I would be a millionare by now if they did work. having said that, there are plenty of people who say that their pest problems stopped when they got one.... Jury is still out on that one Steve
